This is a very difficult post.
The board of Harrison’s Little Wings wishes to inform our amazing community that we will be closing the door to our services at the end of this financial year. It’s not been an easy decision and one that has been years in the making.
I have loved supporting our Mums and their families through the most difficult time of their life. I wish running a charity was just about that. To all our families over the years, you always made this work so rewarding. It’s been an absolute highlight of my life walking beside you. Mum to Mum, heart to heart.
What a lot of people don’t understand is there is alot of networking with hospitals and admin that goes in the back ground to make a charity a successful one.
Firstly networking with hospitals, has been a large degree of my role as Director. I constantly was liaising and trying to engage hospitals. I did a lot of work in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units across Queensland. Most people would think hospitals would welcome support from outside organisations. Sadly that is not the case. They hold all the power and are the gate keepers to referrals. There is a large proportion of Clinicians in hospital settings aren’t necessarily women focused, well not enough to invest time and energy outside their own profession. Having these people invested in an organisation is vital.
Some hospitals were amazing, a big thank you to the Gold Coast MFM unit and RBWH social work department.
Many people want to “help” and I think they have the best intentions when they do offer, but they don’t realise the work, that goes unpaid, and often is not very glamorous.
I have had such an amazing wonderful small team that has worked tirelessly for years. A very heartfelt thank you to Tracey who has been our accounts wonder women. Your dedication and friendship has meant the world to me, and I couldn’t have done all these years without you.
Pam thank you for your endless support being one of our biggest fans/supporters over the years, to then coming on board over the last year. Your energy and enthusiasm has been a breath of fresh air.
When you have a small team that generously gives up their time to make things happen, you have to prioritise what’s important. Raising funds and reporting requirements. It’s exhausting, not glamorous at all. Chasing money and continuously trying to seek sponsors that connect with your mission is hard. Don’t you all know babies don’t get sick in pregnancy and babies do not die!!!! Unless you found a sponsor that had a personal experience or had compassion for our cause, it’s nearly impossible to find. It’s not an exciting cause or popular.
We have been fortunate enough to have money in the bank. So we have spent some of it buying 2 compassion carts for the Gold Coast Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit. These carts will give parents options when their baby passes to choose something meaningful as an item to have to always remember their precious baby.
We are hoping to donate the remainder to the neonatal rescue team that is ran out of RBWH. Whilst I never needed this service, the midwife that looked after Harrison the day he died works part time there. The rescue team does amazing work retrieving babies from all over South East Queensland. It’s more personal when you know they have the most amazing neonatal nurse working there.
Thank you to all those who have supported us over the years. I will be forever grateful.
