"What do I want to do when I finish school?" 🎒💭

That's the question we asked students at the Brisbane School of Distance Education last week.

It was a blast creating a collaborative canvas activity where students shared their ideas, goals, and future plans through drawings and messages.

Our Youth Workers said, "It was a great way to start conversations, and many young people opened up about what they're hoping to achieve through study or work. The activity sparked lots of inspiring discussions around career pathways and the ways Brisbane Youth Service can support them on their journey."

At the South Brisbane Schools and Communities Expo, our Ruby’s team connected with guidance counsellors, educators, and community members to share how early support can make a real difference. Through our Ruby's Reunification Program, we’re helping to prevent young people from experiencing homelessness. We also heard just how needed this work is. Many people who visited our stall hadn’t heard of the program but said it has been needed for a long time, and were grateful to learn it’s now reaching young people across both North and South Brisbane.

Thank you to the organisers for having us at both events. We loved connecting and having meaningful conversations about creating new futures for young people đź’™

To everyone who has already supported our winter appeal – thank you.

Because of you, young people can find safety, care, and support at a time when they need it most. They can have someone in their corner – offering consistency, care, and a way forward.

Today, we’re grateful to be able to share something special with you.

Until 30 June, every donation will be matched – up to a total of $100,000 – thanks to the generosity of The Shepherd Family Foundation.

It means that, together, we can be there for even more young people at critical moments in their lives.

Today we acknowledge Mabo Day and honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose courage and determination helped change the course of Australia’s history.

The Mabo decision recognised the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of this land and overturned the false doctrine of terra nullius.

At Brisbane Youth Service, we acknowledge the lasting impact of Eddie Mabo’s legacy and remain committed to supporting and empowering First Nations young people and communities.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month may be coming to a close, but the work doesn’t stop here.

This year’s theme reminds us that together, Queenslanders can prevent domestic and family violence.

At Brisbane Youth Service, we see how closely youth homelessness and domestic, family, and sexual violence are connected. Almost 3 in 4 young people we meet have experienced family violence, and 1 in 2 have experienced relationship violence.

For many young people, leaving home isn’t a choice – it’s about safety. Our youth workers meet young people where they are, providing wraparound, trauma-informed support led by their needs. This might look like finding safe accommodation, working through crisis, or building the foundations to feel safe again.

Violence thrives in silence. Change happens when communities stay engaged, informed, and connected – not just in May, but all year round.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, help is available. Call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 for 24/7 support or Brisbane Domestic Violence Service on (07) 3217 2544.

Meagan* spent two nights sleeping in a car with her newborn baby.
Home wasn’t safe – but she didn’t know where else to go.

When she came to Brisbane Youth Service, everything began to shift. Within hours, she had somewhere safe to stay, and clean clothes and nappies for her baby.

With the right support at the right time, a moment of crisis can become a turning point.

Today, Meagan and her daughter have a safe place to call home – something every young person and child deserves.

*Meagan's name and image have been changed to protect her real identity.

What an incredible event this year’s Homeless Connect was ✌️ We felt so privileged to attend and connect with our community. It was inspiring to see so many organisations under one roof, each working in different but connected ways to prevent and end homelessness.

Homeless Connect is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the range of services we offer to young people. And we gained valuable insight into the challenges young people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness are currently facing across Brisbane.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat with us, picked up a 'showbag', and took the time to learn more about what we dođź’›

Today on Harm Reduction Day, we recognise the importance of harm reduction approaches in supporting young people experiencing complex needs, including homelessness, mental health challenges, and alcohol and other drug use – because we know compassionate, evidence-based support saves lives, reduces harm, and keeps young people connected to care.

In 2024–2025, 2 in 5 young people who reached out to Brisbane Youth Service told us that substance use had negatively impacted their life in the past. For young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, a lack of stable housing can increase exposure to unsafe environments, violence, exploitation, and barriers to health care and early intervention services.

At BYS, harm reduction is central to our work. We meet young people where they are with practical, non-judgemental support that encourages safer environments and behaviours while building safety, trust, and long-term change.

Through integrated housing, health services, and alcohol and other drug support, BYS also delivers the Queensland Health Needle and Syringe Program and the Take Home Naloxone Program, improving access to practical, life-saving care for young people across Brisbane.

With your help, we can ensure more young people can access safe housing, health care, and holistic, trauma-informed responses that reduce harm and create stable pathways towards futures they deserve.
