Such a beautiful morning for our monthly meet up today. Thanks to all the volunteers who turned up. We spotted a beautiful male Blue Tiger butterfly, planted shallots and did a general tidy up of the shelter, whilst planning for some additional help around the herb beds. Stay posted and see you next month 🌺🦋🍕

This busy lady is a Blue Triangle or Graphium sarpedon choredon.
We watched her for ages as she made many circuits of the Cinnamon tree, looking for the right spot. The eggs are laid on the young shoots of plants the caterpillars are often jerky in their movements. You may even be able to ‘hear’ them chewing!! If disturbed they will give off a strong odour from their osmeterium.
We will keep an eye out and see if we can spot any eggs and keep you posted.

This is a Monarch caterpillar we were lucky enough to find.
He must have read the book, because he certainly has been hungry.
Pic 1 is Sunday Pic 2 is today. I hope to track his progress.

Some facts for you.

All throughout summer, with one generation following another, the females lay single eggs under the leaves of milkweed. When the caterpillars hatch, they eat the leaves and the flowers of the plant. With their colourful racing stripes, they look just as pretty as their parents, but in the animal world they are a clear warning signal. The caterpillars feed on the plant’s milky sap, which makes them toxic and protects them from predators.

Thanks to those who came along for the Butterfly walk on Sunday. It was a lovely morning. We were lucky enough to see among others Pale Triangle, Blue Triangle and Monarchs. Frank as always was a walking encyclopedia for us, and we all know a lot more now about there habits.
