Advocating for Queensland Local Government
LGMA Queensland continues to strengthen its advocacy on the issues that matter to our members and the local government sector.
CEO Tess Bishop recently met with Belinda Drew, Director-General of the Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety, to discuss areas where state policy, reform and service delivery intersect with the work of Queensland councils.
The discussion provided an important opportunity to raise the practical implications for local government across areas including disaster recovery and community resilience, Child Safe Standards, disability and inclusion, domestic and family violence reform, and place-based service delivery.
Importantly, LGMA Queensland is advocating for councils to be considered early as reforms are developed and implemented, with clear roles, practical guidance and appropriate support where new responsibilities or compliance requirements affect local government.
These conversations are also about building stronger connections between the sector and State Government, creating opportunities for ongoing dialogue and ensuring the experience of those working in Queensland councils informs decisions that ultimately affect their communities.
This is an important part of LGMA Queensland’s role: listening to our members, representing the sector and making sure local government has a voice at the table.
