“Superfood” macadamia nuts planted for Carnaby Cockatoos. 🌳 🌳

WA councils and locals have been planting macadamia trees in green areas to provide food for the endangered Carnaby's Black Cockatoo species.

Botanist and University of WA professor Kingsley Dixon said the trees were providing much-needed food for the clever birds.

“Macadamias are essentially a superfood for them,” he said

“In Perth it’s the number one nut species that is keeping the Perth flocks alive.

“Waroona have put in heaps [of trees], and they keep asking for more and Lake Clifton… In Lake Clifton we’ve got a real crisis with Carnaby’s; we’re down to just six breeding pairs, so they’re right on the brink.

“Carnaby’s are the only bird capable of opening a macadamia… they can perfectly split those nuts."

The birds have been heavily reliant on Banksia trees for food and habitat, but Professor Dixon said those trees could not be planted quickly enough.

“A single macadamia seed can have the equivalent nourishment of 35 Banksia seeds. So it’s about fast food to fill this gap while we wait for our Banksias.”
