💡Plant Spotlight: Eremophila mackinlayi chimera.

E mackinlayi chimera is a E mackinlayi plant grafted onto a Myoporum base. In some cases the plant becomes a chimera having genes from both the Eremophila and Myoporum plants.

In nature E mackinlayi is a small shrub whereas the chimera grows to 3 or 4 metres.

The Chimera can become a bit raggedy but in full bloom it’s a very impressive plant.

This plant is growing on a basalt based high clay soil, though it is very permeable. It can withstand dry periods and severe frosts and is grown from a cutting.

Latest news from Queensland Wattle Assoc Inc - The Wattle Blooms Walks in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens – Mt Coot-tha are available again this year commencing at 10am on Tuesday 12 July, with the last walk being Sunday 18 August.

There will be two walks per week. Please come and join the Queensland Wattle Assoc Inc and let your friends know about the walks.

⚠️Meet Far North Queensland’s Most Infamous Native Plant⚠️

Hidden amongst the lush rainforests of the Wet Tropics is one of Australia's most remarkable native plants – the Gympie-Gympie or stinging tree (Dendrocnide moroides).

At first glance, its large heart-shaped leaves look soft and inviting. Unfortunately, those fuzzy-looking hairs are actually tiny silica needles packed with a powerful toxin. Even the lightest touch can cause an intense burning sting that may last for days, weeks, or in some cases, even months. Young leaves carry the highest concentration of stinging hairs.

Despite its fearsome reputation, the Gympie-Gympie plays an important role in our rainforest ecosystems. It naturally colonises disturbed areas and rainforest edges, helping to regenerate the forest. Its small fruits are also eaten by birds and other wildlife.

A true reminder that our native flora is every bit as fascinating as our native fauna; beautiful, unique, and deserving of respect from a safe distance!
