Yesterday EDQ brought WEDAD directly to Queensland Parliament.

We were honoured to welcome Hon. Tim Nicholls MP, Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, as our official guest. Minister Nicholls spoke to EDQ’s WEDAD 2026 theme, “Conversation Sparks Action – Investment Makes it Happen”, reinforcing the importance of sustained commitment to eating disorder support and prevention.

As the first WEDAD since the launch of the Parliamentary Friends of Eating Disorder Initiatives, we were also privileged to celebrate alongside Co-Patrons Hon. Shannon Fentiman MP and Miss Ariana Doolan MP, whose support continues to strengthen this important work.

Hearing lived experience was a powerful highlight of the day. Georgia (Lived Experience Team) and Amber (Carer Team) shared their stories with Members of Parliament, illustrating the vital role of community-based support in recovery journeys.

Connecting directly with our policymakers in this way is a meaningful step toward driving awareness, action, and investment in eating disorder care.

We were incredibly grateful for the strong support shown by MPs at yesterday’s World Eating Disorders Action Day event at Parliament House.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such an important conversation- together, we can continue to drive meaningful change for Queenslanders. 💜💚

Eating Disorders Queensland (EDQ) provides safe, supportive care for people recovering from eating disorders, delivered by skilled practitioners in a welcoming environment.

EDQ offers individual therapeutic support, group therapy, and non‑therapeutic support for people aged 16+ across Queensland.

This is a hugely concerning area and needs significant Government Investment.

Eating disorders affect so many, yet remain widely misunderstood.

We’re so proud to see World Eating Disorders Action Day recognised in Parliament on June 2, with Renee Coffey MP speaking up for those impacted - shining a light on the urgent need for better support, early intervention, and understanding.

Every voice matters. And change starts with conversations like this. 💜

Today, on World Eating Disorder Action Day, EDQ is calling for a strengthened, collaborative approach to eating disorder care.

Strengthening early intervention, equitable access, and improved outcomes for individuals, families, and the broader health system.

Across Queensland, demand for services continues to grow:

🚨 Nearly threefold increase in people accessing eating disorder-related health services over the past decade
🚨 38,922 emergency department presentations linked to eating disorders
🚨 72,620 hospital admissions, placing significant pressure on inpatient care
🚨 A fivefold increase in outpatient service contacts, reflecting rising community need

This growing demand highlights the urgent need for accessible, community-based, evidence-informed care.

Conversation Sparks Action. Investment Makes it Happen.

EDQ stands ready to partner with the government to deliver innovative, community-based solutions that improve access, outcomes, and system sustainability 💚

Today, EDQ acknowledges National Sorry Day and honours the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were affected by past government policies of forced removal, including the Stolen Generations.

We stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, listening and learning as we work towards a more inclusive, respectful, and equitable future.

We recognise the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma, loss of culture, identity, family, and connection to Country. These experiences continue to shape the health and wellbeing of First Nations communities today.

We acknowledge that culturally safe, accessible, and community-led support is essential for healing.

Today, and every day, we commit to walking alongside First Nations communities with humility, respect, and a dedication to truth, healing, and reconciliation.

From Sorry to Action.

Help us spread the word – Free specialised eating disorder support available 💚

EDQ is proud to support an opportunity from the InsideOut Institute at the University of Sydney.

Young people with Anorexia Nervosa or Atypical AN, and individuals aged 16+ with Bulimia Nervosa (BN) or Binge Eating Disorder (BED) can access 6 months of free, high-quality, highly individualised care through their Signature Studies.

Open to self-referrals and clinician referrals:
📧 [email protected]
📞 0489 990 589

This is a great option to consider when exploring referral pathways over the next 18 months. If someone isn’t eligible for these two options, it is highly likely that the InsideOut team will help connect them with other suitable studies or supports.

We encourage our network to share this opportunity and help connect people with accessible, evidence-based care.

🌈 17 May is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex Discrimination and Transphobia.

At EDQ, we stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ communities across Queensland and beyond.

The day is a reminder that everyone deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect. Free from discrimination, stigma, and violence.

We commit to fostering inclusive environments where diversity is celebrated, voices are heard, and equality is actively championed.

Together, we can create a future where Every Body belongs. 💜

The 2026–27 Federal Budget signals progress for mental health, but eating disorders must be explicitly included in NDIS reform.

Without it, 1.1 million Australians risk falling through the cracks.

We need targeted, specialist supports: Early, Visible, and Funded.
