These books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids will help bridge the literacy gap and empower children at Okesana Pre School in Goroka District in PNG’s Highlands.
Waniati Maternal Waiting Home, a Goroka-based NGO, delivered the books to Okesana and other schools in rural communities around Eastern Highlands Province (EHP) after Books 4 PNG Kids donated 50 cartons of books and shipped them from Brisbane-Lae in 2025.
The books will also be used for mothers and their children staying at Waniati, which provides accommodation, food and health care for marginalised pregnant women from remote villages, as well as health care and child immunisation in EHP communities.
Okesana Pre School is a designated Early Childhood Learning Centre in the Gehamo-Okesana community, which warmly welcomed Waniati’s team and other books donated by Project YUMI.
The community also provided fresh garden food to ensure pregnant women staying at Waniati in Goroka received vital nutrition.
Okiufa Primary School’s principal Gabriel Mek also attended and said education changes to one year of prep and six years of primary school had put pressure on classroom space.
Founded in 2020 by Victor Timothy and his wife, maternal and child health coordinator Sr Bolena Azimo, Waniati Maternal Waiting Home aims to improve maternal and child health by providing safe childbirth practices, nutrition education and other essential services to rural and unserved communities, Victor says.
Books offer many benefits to both mothers and remote schools, he says.
“For mothers, they can foster cognitive and language development in children, strengthening their parent-child bond and cultivating a love for reading.
“In remote schools, books can be a valuable resource for expanding curricula, providing educational opportunities, and fostering literacy skills in underserved communities.”
For girls, increased literacy fostered by access to books can reduce the likelihood of early pregnancies.
