Books 4 PNG Kids

Books 4 PNG Kids We accept donations of young children's books up to Grade 8 books. Please no textbooks (unless requested). We need your help! They, above all, DESERVE your help.

Books 4 PNG KIDS is a Brisbane based book collection organisation with many willing helpers too numerous to mention here . Through donations from local schools, libraries, and often individuals, we receive and ship out hundreds of boxes of books to various areas of Papua New
Guinea each year. Having done business in PNG for over 20 years, we have developed many strong connections with indigeno

us people and have developed an inspiring and intimate relationship with some of the most remote villages on the planet. Having these connections, we have compiled a long list (most upon request!) of just some of the many schools that are in dire need of help building up and maintaining their libraries and school textbook resources. With each trip made back to PNG, there are always more schools with eager children being added to the ever-growing list of places that are in need of YOUR USED AND NEW BOOKS, textbooks, children's picture books, early reading books, dictionaries, primary-school non-fiction books and magazines. With each shipment made back to PNG, there are always the hopeful, smiling faces of those children, beaming with appreciation and gratitude for each book they receive from our donors. The peoples of PNG are unfortunate in their lacking education system and isolation from all the modern resources that first world countries have available, but so fortunate are they (and we) that they have the unwaivering optimism and hope to to increase the level of education for their people and their children! Papua New Guineans are beautiful, genuine people, and their needs are great for the resources and materials to help guide their children and themselves towards a better educated and more promising future. RIGHT TO READ
These books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids will help bridge the literacy gap and empower children at Okesana Pre School in Goroka District in PNG’s Highlands.
Waniati Maternal Waiting Home, a Goroka-based NGO, delivered the books to Okesana and other schools in rural communities around Eastern Highlands Province (EHP) after Books 4 PNG Kids donated 50 cartons of books and shipped them from Brisbane-Lae in 2025.
The books will also be used for mothers and their children staying at Waniati, which provides accommodation, food and health care for marginalised pregnant women from remote villages, as well as health care and child immunisation in EHP communities.
Okesana Pre School is a designated Early Childhood Learning Centre in the Gehamo-Okesana community, which warmly welcomed Waniati’s team and other books donated by Project YUMI.
The community also provided fresh garden food to ensure pregnant women staying at Waniati in Goroka received vital nutrition.
Okiufa Primary School’s principal Gabriel Mek also attended and said education changes to one year of prep and six years of primary school had put pressure on classroom space.
Founded in 2020 by Victor Timothy and his wife, maternal and child health coordinator Sr Bolena Azimo, Waniati Maternal Waiting Home aims to improve maternal and child health by providing safe childbirth practices, nutrition education and other essential services to rural and unserved communities, Victor says.
Books offer many benefits to both mothers and remote schools, he says.
“For mothers, they can foster cognitive and language development in children, strengthening their parent-child bond and cultivating a love for reading.
“In remote schools, books can be a valuable resource for expanding curricula, providing educational opportunities, and fostering literacy skills in underserved communities.”
For girls, increased literacy fostered by access to books can reduce the likelihood of early pregnancies.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Daily life is tough for many teachers and pupils at remote PNG schools.
Take these two schools in PNG’s far Western Province, where teachers were overwhelmed to receive books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids - and much-needed food rations donated and delivered by Kayop Investment Limited.
Teachers at Miasomoe Primary School, about 20km from Kiunga along the highway to Tabubil, and Kmom Primary School, 17km from the main road, welcomed the much needed resources - including the “very timely” food delivery.
Miasomoe Primary’s head teacher Jasmine Max said the food rations were very timely as her teachers were “off the payroll” due to auto-suspensions of their pay.
In recent years, thousands of PNG teachers have had their pay automatically suspended due to delays in filing their annual teacher registration.
For teachers at remote schools without electricity, roads or computer access, filing paperwork would not be easy.
In March this year, more than 22,000 teachers were at risk of being suspended from the payroll for missing the deadline to submit their registration paperwork, The National reported (https://www.thenational.com.pg/20000-plus-teachers-facing-suspension/).
Kayop delivered 30 boxes of library books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids to Miasomoe and Kmom Primary Schools, along with 2 boxes of first aid kits, reading glasses and food worth K3,000+.
More than 200 students attend each school.
Kmom’s head teacher was overwhelmed and thankful to receive the books and food.
Kayop through its Star Mountain Education Foundation continues to support schools and communities in North Fly District by delivering books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids.
This is an initiative of Kayop’s MD and Star Mountain Education Foundation chairman Maino Lucas.
Books 4 PNG Kids proudly acknowledges partners Kayop and Maino Lucas for supporting children’s education in PNG.

CARE TO SHARE
Making a difference internationally, one book at a time!
Who would think that so many people from around the world would unite for Books 4 PNG Kids?
Last Friday was just a snapshot of what happens at Books 4 PNG Kids, when a tight team of allied health staff from Rehab Management, Brisbane, chose Books 4 PNG Kids for their annual day of volunteering.
Pictured at Books 4 PNG Kids’ factory are Rehab Management’s South Qld area manager Jasmine Matkovic, business systems administrator Sam Richards and consultants Kamohelo Moletsane, Michael Streeting, Rachel Min and Jasmine Crawford, who powered through the labelling of 9 pallets of books - that’s a grand total of 648 boxes.
Not bad for a morning’s work!
Jasmine Crawford hails from Dobu Island, Milne Bay Province - “just a six-hour dinghy ride” from the PNG mainland!
That gives you some idea of how difficult access is to many places in PNG.
Later, a team of switched-on students and staff from Carinity Education Southside volunteered, preparing books including thousands of newly published titles written and donated by NZ-based retired medical couple Julie and David Hamilton.
These students stood out for being on-the-ball and asking questions that mattered to get the job done.
The Hamiltons have been generous book donors to Books 4 PNG Kids over many years, paying for the annual publication by Brisbane’s Boolarong Press of books written by Julie specifically for children (and adults) in PNG.
David and Julie lived and worked in PNG for many years, he as a surgeon and she as a physiotherapist with the Leprosy Reconstructive Surgical Unit in Madang from 1965, and later in Rabaul, where she ran a provincial project for people with disabilities.
Julie’s books, some written with PNG colleagues and friends, draw on her experiences in PNG. They tell how to help people with disabilities or heath problems.
Julie’s books have reached schools throughout PNG in recent years and now, in partnership with Kayop, may also reach remote Western Province schools like these along the Fly River.
Thanks to the Star Mountain Education Foundation, books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids are being delivered to these schools by boat, an initiative of Kayop MD Maino Lucas.
“When kids have books, they have a chance to read, learn and build a better future for themselves and for Western Province,” Maino says.

WONDERFUL SURPRISE
This was a day that will be long remembered by all the pupils and teachers at this small Southern Highlands school on the outskirts of the provincial capital, Mendi.
Everyone at PNG Bible Church Tente Christian Academy was taken by surprise when Ferman Mombu and team delivered 10 cartons of books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids.
The children were thrilled to receive, hold and open the books to read.
They’d probably never dreamed of having their own school library of books!
The school has more than 100 pupils and is in Tente Street, just outside Mendi town.
“We took the school by surprise,” Ferman says.
“We loaded 10 cartons of elementary supplies into our truck, drove straight to the school and donated them.”
The Principal, Mrs Kera, said it was the first time the school had ever received such donations from any organisation or government.
“We have never received any help from any organisation,” she said.
“With these 10 cartons of books, it will surely help our kids’ learning and we truly appreciate it.”
She gave her big thanks to Books 4 PNG Kids and Ferman and team for choosing the school for this donation.
“We couldn’t say or do much but truly appreciate the donation.”
Our thanks to Ferman and team for delivering books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids to so many schools throughout Southern Highlands.
Books 4 PNG Kids shipped the books to Lae last year and then Ferman organised and funded their transport via the Okuk (Highlands) Highway to Southern Highlands schools.
Books 4 PNG Kids also proudly acknowledges partners Kayop and Maino Lucas for supporting children’s education in PNG.

FILLING THE GAP
It’s tough being a school teacher or pupil in Papua New Guinea.
Even though this school, Aipos Preschool, is just three minutes’ drive from Eastern Highlands’ provincial capital, Goroka, and the University of Goroka School of Education, it lacked books.
Things changed recently with these books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids and Project YUMI and delivered by Waniati Maternal Waiting Home.
Books are crucial to spark children’s interest so they develop the literacy they need to progress to higher levels of education.
Last year, Books 4 PNG Kids donated a pallet of books (approximately 72 boxes of books) to Waniati Maternal Waiting Home after shipping a container of books from Brisbane-Lae.
Expectant mothers and their children staying at the Goroka-based NGO now have access to books, while Waniati volunteers delivered other books to more remote schools.
These included Iyapimuku Primary School (249 students), in mountainous country in Unggai-Bena District, about 25km SW of Goroka.
Nivi Primary School (229 students) and Nivi-Maibena Primary School (270 students) also received books from Books 4 PNG Kids in the same delivery.
Such donations help schools improve reading skills in early education, Waniati Maternal Waiting Home posted.
Aipos Preschool’s principal highlighted a critical gap between teacher training and the availability of essential classroom tools.
While the Division of Education has provided the necessary professional development, the lack of government-supplied resources has left a void that charitable donations are now filling, the school principal said.
Waniati Maternal Waiting Home focuses on improving maternal and child health by providing essential services such as nutrition education and safe childbirth practices to rural and unserved communities, executive director and founder Victor Timothy said.
Books 4 PNG Kids also proudly acknowledges partners Kayop and Maino Lucas for supporting children’s education in PNG.

Talk about a stellar effort!
Take a look at this team from One Tribe Ministries.
This morning they labelled 16 pallets of books ready to be shipped to schools in PNG.
That’s their best-ever total, which is saying something because most of these volunteers - Collin Palmer, Russell Carr, Wesely Green and Ross Broadbent, led by One Tribe Ministries’ Alan Goode, are regulars at Books 4 PNG Kids and are ever ready to meet the challenge when we request their help.
They’re pictured with Books 4 PNG Kids founder-CEO Heather Doonan and another regular volunteer, Lynne.
One Tribe Ministries provides vocational training and literacy courses for prisoners in PNG so that they have skills to start their own businesses and find employment when they’re released.
Today we also celebrated two birthdays, for Russ and for Georgina, a long-term Books 4 PNG Kids volunteer who grew up in PNG in the 1970s.
These volunteers give of their time and energy to ensure books donated by many generous schools, libraries, publishers, individuals and others are sorted, packed and labelled, ready to be donated to PNG schools.
Collecting, storing and preparing books for shipment to PNG also requires logistical backing, so the partnership, generosity and practical support of Kayop makes this happen.
Behind every container, every delivery and every school distribution is an enormous amount of work — and support from organisations like Kayop helps books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids to reach schools throughout PNG.
Pictured is a recent Kayop delivery of 30 cartons of books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids to St Montfort Kiunga Teachers’ College, in Kiunga, North Fly District, Western Province.
The College opened on March 2 this year and has enrolled 45 students, strictly on merit.
It had a library block but no books.
The principal said the books, shipped from Brisbane-Kiunga by Kayop, would greatly assist the students.
We sincerely thank Maino Lucas and the entire Kayop team for standing behind children’s literacy and education in PNG.

CARE TO SHARE
The arrival of these books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids to a school without a library in PNG’s Highlands prompted an outpouring of goodwill that flowed through the whole community.
As these photos from Petrus Honga show, Omptep Primary School in Western Highlands Province now has enough books to fill a library.
Previously the 369 students at the school in Lower Nebilyer LLG, Tambul-Nebilyer District, had no library and only had a few reading books in each classroom.
The arrival of the books was a big occasion.
Students came bearing a bounty of fresh fruit in celebration.
After Books 4 PNG Kids donated and shipped the books to Port Moresby more than a year ago, Petrus was able to deliver them to Omptep Primary School with the support of Brian Bell logistics.
“The reception of the community was so great,” Petrus says.
Parents, students from grades 3-8, the school’s 12 teachers and board members welcomed Petrus, who left with a car full of fruit.
He gave the fruit to mourners at a funeral in a nearby community on his way home.
“While handing over the fruit I also advocated for the importance of education, the effects it (has) on individuals' lives and encouraged all school-age kids to attend school,” Petrus says.
Books 4 PNG Kids’ many generous book donors and volunteers make such deliveries possible.
These include regular student volunteers from Carinity Education Southside and donors including Stationery Aid (co-founding director Alison Schutt is shown after donating 300kg of stationery and other items to Books 4 PNG Kids) and many schools.
Your contributions are making the world a better place.

SPECIAL DELIVERY!
These boxes contain hundreds of books - enough to fill a school library - donated by Books 4 PNG Kids for this remote school in PNG’s Highlands.
Ferman Mombu and team delivered the 30 cartons of books to Pinz Primary School in Imbonggu District, Southern Highlands Province, this month.
It was a challenging journey to deliver the books after Books 4 PNG Kids donated and shipped the books from Brisbane to Lae last year.
Lae is 600km along the Okuk (Highlands) Highway from Mendi, the capital of Southern Highlands, so it was a long trip to return with the books for Pinz Primary and dozens of other Southern Highlands schools.
The delivery to Pinz Primary School was another journey by rough road through rugged country to the school in one of the most remote parts of Imbonggu District, southeast of Mt Giluwe (4367m), PNG’s second highest mountain.
At the end of the road, students and other community members carried the boxes of books uphill to the school.
Everyone was thrilled to receive the books.
Ferman has been a champion for Books 4 PNG Kids, delivering books to dozens of schools throughout the province over the last few years.

This week (May 18-24) is Volunteer Week 2026 - so here’s a shout-out to Books 4 PNG Kids volunteers!
Volunteers and many generous book donors make it possible for Books 4 PNG Kids to donate books to schools throughout PNG, where many schools have no library, few, if any, books and no electricity or internet.
Books are crucial for students to develop literacy and further their education.
Each week at Books 4 PNG Kids’ factory in Brisbane, volunteers sort and pack books donated by schools, libraries, publishers, community groups and others to send to PNG schools.
These donors include Stationery Aid, which recently donated 300kg of stationery including writing pads, pens and pencils. Schoolstuff is another regular donor of textbooks and stationery.
Many of our volunteers are long-term regulars and also include year 10-12 students from Carinity Education Southside, who are making a marked difference to the lives of their fellow students in PNG by volunteering each week at Books 4 PNG Kids.
In PNG, dedicated volunteers overcome considerable challenges to deliver books to often remote schools from the Highlands to the islands, across rivers, oceans and rugged mountains, sometimes carrying boxes of books on foot uphill on muddy tracks to schools with no road access.
Other volunteer contributors to Books 4 PNG Kids include Bags Tugulawa/Bulimba Brisbane.
Pictured is Rosemary Neal, who last Friday donated dozens of beautiful book bags made by the creative members of this group.
The bags are sure to be a hit with PNG students, judging by the reaction of Charlotte, the granddaughter of Books 4 PNG Kids founder/CEO Heather Doonan, pictured also with Books 4 PNG Kids volunteer Catherine Levy, a linguist who has lived in PNG.
Nothing compares to the excitement of children receiving books.
Through the support of partners including Kayop and Maino Lucas, Books4PNGKids continues delivering books to schools and communities across PNG.
Together, we are helping build stronger futures through literacy.

WILLING HANDS
The road to education is often rugged for students in PNG.
But with 30 boxes of books donated by Books 4 PNG Kids and delivered by Ferman Kemnasi Mombu and team, the journey just became a little smoother for students at Pinz Primary School in Southern Highlands Province.
This school is in a very remote area of Imbonggu District, southeast of Mt Giluwe (4367m tall), PNG’s second-highest mountain, and an hour’s drive along a rugged, bumpy road from Ferman’s home.
At the end of the road, students helped Ferman and volunteers by carrying the books up to the school.
The delivery on May 7 was a big event for the community.
The students, parents and others were waiting with anticipation to welcome Ferman and team, with the school grounds decorated, teachers in formal attire, students in full uniform, and dances, dramas and “Thank You” signs prepared.
At the event, Pinz Primary’s head teacher Michael John expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Books 4 PNG Kids and Ferman and his small team of volunteers who distribute the books throughout Southern Highlands Province.
“I also stressed the effort, expenses and time taken to send these books to PNG and I urged the kids and teachers to look after the books properly,” Ferman said.
In closing, the village councillor also thanked Books 4 PNG Kids for the effort put into sending the books all the way to Pinz Primary School.
Ferman has been a champion for Books 4 PNG Kids in Southern Highlands, delivering books to dozens of schools throughout the province over the last few years.
He says educating a child is a shared responsibility, “so we are doing our part to contribute to the students’ learning and for the future of our province and nation.
“Education is the only tool that can be used to change this nation, PNG.”
