🏠 What turns a house into a home? (Hint: it's not just four walls and a roof.)

Imagine trying to rebuild your life while making impossible choices between paying rent, buying groceries or replacing a broken household item. The emotional toll of constantly choosing what you have to go without can be exhausting.

But when one urgent need is met, it creates space to focus on the next challenge. It provides breathing room. It provides hope.

Something as simple as curtains can transform the way a person lives in their home. Here at GIVIT, we've seen people using cardboard or bedsheets to cover windows because they can't afford anything else. Curtains offer privacy, dignity, better sleep, protection from the heat and cold, and a sense of security. They help a home feel permanent rather than temporary.

When people feel safe, comfortable and proud of where they live, they're more likely to put down roots, connect with their community and make positive choices for the future.

Breaking the cycle of hardship starts with helping someone feel at home.

Homelessness doesn't happen in isolation.

Behind every housing crisis is a person with a story.

Sometimes it's a parent escaping domestic and family violence, leaving everything behind to keep their children safe. Sometimes it's someone navigating a mental health challenge that's made it harder to maintain work, relationships or stable housing. Sometimes it's a combination of challenges that have built up over time, creating a situation that feels impossible to overcome alone.

That's why GIVIT's work goes beyond helping people keep a roof over their head.

We support people experiencing homelessness, but we also help those affected by domestic and family violence, mental health challenges and other hardships that can put housing, wellbeing and stability at risk.

Here at GIVIT we believe that lasting change happens when we support the whole person, not just one challenge they're facing.
