🌊🛥️🌊 - important information regarding coastal bar crossing from Maritime Safety Queensland

As we head into the autumn boating season, here’s a reminder of some important bar crossing safety tips we shared earlier this summer.

💡 Did you know?
If you're crossing a designated coastal bar in Queensland, it’s mandatory for everyone on board in an open boat, as well as in any open area of a boat of any length, and on certain craft, to wear a lifejacket.

Here are some quick tips for safer boating:
✅ Check your safety gear is in good condition and easy to access
✅ Know the conditions before heading out
✅ Don’t overload your vessel
✅ Keep a proper lookout at all times
✅ Avoid alcohol while operating your vessel

Wearing a lifejacket can save your life. Don’t take the risk.

Boat safe. Be home safe.

🚤 Have Your Say: Inkerman Creek Floating Walkway (Port Alma Road)

We want your feedback on the new floating walkway concept design for the Inkerman Creek Boat Ramp (Port Alma Road).

The concept design proposes the installation of:
· A 50 metre long floating walkway with concrete decking
· Cleats for safer docking and securing vessels
· A lamp post with solar-powered lighting to support night time visibility and safety.

The new walkway will:
- Reduce time spent on the boat ramp
- Allow safer boarding of vessels for skippers and passengers
- Improve accessibility during strong tidal conditions.

📅 Consultation runs from Monday 16 February to Sunday 15 March 2026

Navigating Wet Weather Conditions

Wet weather across the Gold Coast can quickly change conditions on our waterways, with stronger currents, debris and reduced visibility after heavy rain.

At GCWA, we monitor conditions, maintain channels and navigation aids, and respond to issues as they arise, but timely reporting from the boating community helps us act faster.

If you notice a damaged, missing or displaced navigation aid (AtoN), please report it to GCWA as soon as possible on 5539 7350. Quick reports help us keep everyone moving safely.

Before heading out, check the forecast, plan your route and allow extra time.

Marine stinger safety–update to Guideline 9.4.5 - First Aid Management of Marine Envenomation ⚠️🐙

Dive and snorkelling operators should be aware that ANZCOR has recently updated their guidance on marine envenomation.

Important note: These updates do not change the recommended treatment, but they do provide additional advice regarding potentially fatal envenomation’s.

Operators are encouraged to review the changes carefully to ensure safety practices remain aligned with the latest recommendations.

Stinger safety reminders:
✅ Supply and encourage protective swimwear (full body lycra suits or neoprene wetsuits)
✅ Inspect gear regularly for damage
✅ Brief snorkellers and divers clearly on risks, symptoms, and first aid procedures
✅ Ensure staff are trained and ready to respond to marine stings
