A fabulous initiative for using land and roof space in an inner city environment!
Most supermarket lettuce travels a long way before it reaches the shelf.
One Berlin supermarket tried something very different.
A large greenhouse was built directly on the roof, allowing leafy greens and herbs to be grown just above the store where they are sold.
That changes the journey completely.
Instead of being harvested far away, packed onto trucks and transported across long distances, some produce can move only a few floors before reaching customers.
The rooftop setup also makes use of space that would otherwise sit mostly empty.
Urban farming projects like this do not replace traditional agriculture, and they cannot grow every type of food a supermarket needs. But they show how cities can produce at least part of their food much closer to the people buying it.
A supermarket roof may seem like an unlikely place for a farm.
But in a crowded city, even the space above the checkout aisles can become part of the food system.
