Association of Independent Retirees - North Brisbane Branch

At a meeting on the Sunshine Coast on 2 June 1990, it was decided to form an association to address the problems facing those retirees who had saved and worked hard to fund their own retirement. The name selected was “Retired Citizens of Queensland”.

Member numbers escalated quickly and there were soon moves to form other branches in other parts of Queensland and later, in other States. This was the beginning of what is now known as the “Association of Independent Retirees”.

The first meeting of what was to become the Brisbane North Branch was held at the Kedron Wavell Services Club on 19 October 1992 and attended by 47 people. At the next meeting, there were 175 people. The Branch then became an affiliated member of the Association at the State Management Committee Meeting in February 1993.

Notices of monthly meetings were published in the Community Billboards of the “Redcliffe & Bayside Herald”, “Bayside Star” & the “Pine Rivers News”. Articles were also regularly published in different “Quest Newspapers”.

The then Association was registered as an incorporation with the then Queensland Department of Consumer Affairs on 21 May 1993 and registered to trade Australia wide with the Australian Securities Commission on 28 May 1993.

The branch adopted the official name of “Association of Independent Retirees Inc., Brisbane North Branch”.

The first annual report of the Branch indicates that little has changed over the years as problems facing self-funded retirees were identified as “lowering incomes” and “increasing taxes”. There was also a push for self-funded retirees to receive parity with pensioners in relation to the concessions they received from government agencies.

The Branch’s management Committee identified increasing operating costs as a major concern and looked at ways to address this issue. That same problem has not gone away and today’s Committee continues to look at ways to minimise costs.

Throughout the years, the Branch has persistently lobbied politicians at all levels to enhance the status and quality of life for retirees.

The Branch will continue this work and it will be interesting to look back after the passing of the next 20 years.
