Our team were again privileged to be a part of Assisi Catholic College, Coomera's 'The Assisi Underground', an annual Holocaust remembrance day experience organised by the school for the Year 9 cohort. Thank you to the school's staff and students who were so welcoming of our team and engaged so well with the message of our program. We look forward to taking part in the day again in 2027!
Beneath the Surface: The Assisi Underground
Some of history's most important stories happened quietly.
Today, our Year 9 students explored those stories through The Assisi Underground, a powerful Holocaust Remembrance Day experience that challenged them to reflect on courage, compassion and the responsibility to stand up for others. 🕯️
Students heard from Courage to Care about the role of Upstanders during the Holocaust, before listening to Holocaust survivor Peter Baruch share his deeply moving story of resilience and survival. His testimony brought history to life and left a lasting impression on all who attended.
The day also honoured the courageous Franciscan monks and citizens of Assisi who risked everything to shelter Jewish people during the N**i occupation of Italy. Their legacy reminds us that even in the darkest times, people can choose kindness, hope and moral courage. 🤝
At Assisi, we believe learning should inspire both understanding and action. Today's experience encouraged our students to consider not only the lessons of history, but the role they can play in creating a more compassionate future. ❤️
Thank you to our History and Humanities Department, Courage to Care, Peter Baruch and all involved in making this day so meaningful.
