Why do koalas choose the highest, thinnest, branches?
🍃That’s where the good stuff grows!
🌳This koala was lying on this very thin branch at the top of the tree, over-reaching to access a handful of leaves due to them being higher in moisture, lower in toxins, and easier to digest.
🐨They must be choosy about each mouthful, with a low-energy diet!
🐾They navigate branches well (probably taught by mum). But they can fall if they misjudge a branch or a jump, or if fighting with another koala.
🚨They also don't understand human-related threats, so can walk straight in front of cars or approach a territorial dog.
⚠️Koala activity increases each week from Winter through Spring.
🌃They're particularly active from dusk to dawn which coincides with our work/school commute.

💥There was another close call this week at the Boundary Rd black spot near the Whites Hill entrance. Thanks to Koala Rescue Brisbane South Inc. for keeping an eye on the koala. This area is a koala favourite but has poor visibility & cars speed through there.

😭Last year, 146 of our local koalas didn’t survive.

But simple actions give them a fighting chance
🛻Slow down, especially dusk to dawn.
🐕Keep dogs contained at night & on a lead in public.
🌿Keep/plant trees.
☎️Save rescue numbers before you need them.
📲Call if a koala needs help, is deceased (pouch check required) or you're not sure - don't message/text.
🤳Log all sightings in QWildlife or iNaturalist.
🗨️Help raise awareness with family, friends & community.
📨Ask your local, state and federal representatives to do more to help protect them.

💚Every single one we save keeps our local population viable and helps contribute to the genetic diversity of Queensland’s endangered koalas.🧬

These photos of koala Gilbert are too cute to not share!
We recently attended the 'G'day Little Queenslanders' event at Whites Hill and were thrilled to hear D'Aguilar Wildlife and Ranger Stacey help educate the crowd about our precious koalas, with little Gilbert the main attraction.
Aussies don't know much about our koalas' unique biology and behaviour so often think that they will adapt to us rather than us accommodating them.

The more that we can do to raise awareness and engagement, the better:
- For us to take small individual actions to help them like wildlife friendly driving, pet ownership & tree planting/retention
- And to ask our representatives to do better to protect them & their habitat

🙏Thanks to Brisbane City Council for recent actions to help make 2 of our worst koala black spots a little safer for our endangered koalas.
⚫Pine Mountain Rd has had the vegetation near the roadside cleared, helping to improve visibility
⚫Boundary Rd has had new koala climb-outs installed in one of the steep embankments where koalas can be trapped, just south of the Whites Hill entrance.

🏎️It was disappointing that while taking these photos, cars flew past and the Boundary Rd koala signs flashed red continually.

🐨No matter what tree you look at along these roads, there are koala scratches and s**t - terrifyingly close to the road.

⚠️Last year we lost 146 koalas in our area, so please help raise awareness about the need to slow down on these roads and our area as we enter the high-risk 2nd half of the year.

🖤Boundary Rd was responsible for 7 koala deaths, 6 wallaby deaths and another 5 koala injuries and 58 occasions where volunteers attended to check &/or protect them just in 2025!
🖤Pine Mountain Rd & Wyncroft St caused 8 koala deaths and another 2 injured, as well as 21 events where volunteers protected them. We also know of 1 wallaby death.

👌Slow down, leave a gap, scan roadsides ahead
👌Keep dogs indoors/a confined area at night & on a lead in public
👌Keep/plant a tree for koalas to eat (eucalypts) or safety (any tree)
👌Save rescue numbers - now, before you need them - and if a koala needs help, stop-call-wait (don't message/text)

We were thrilled to spot a koala on our walk with BirdLife Australia and Coffey MP but amazed that we saw/heard 24 birds! We didn't get photos of most of them as they were too fast! We wouldn't have seen or heard most of them and were only aware of them due to the great eyes and ears of the expert bird spotters. It was a lovely walk that will add a whole new dimension to our future walks!
