The legacy left by poet, musician, and revolutionary Gil Scott-Heron is underrated but undeniable. Artists from Kendrick Lamar to Common and Jamie XX cite his influence; Drake, Kanye West and 2pac have sampled him. He has also been bestowed, somewhat reluctantly, with titles like the ‘Godfather of Rap’ and the ‘Architect of Conscious Hip Hop’.
That legacy is underwritten by the lush, soulful score of his long-time collaborator, Brian Jackson. The two met at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where they formed a quick friendship anchored in music and driven by the civil rights movement and anti-war sentiment.
‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ is arguably their most famous and most impactful song. This foundational piece warns against complacency in the face of commercialisation and commodification, while providing pointed commentary on the societal inequalities experienced by the Black community in 1970s America. It’s a call to arms, and its enduring themes feel prophetic.
Fusing politically-conscious poetry, jazz and funk, Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson created the blueprint for so many artists that came after them. Their combined contribution is intrinsically linked; a true example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. In a special world-first performance, Brian Jackson invites us to experience the alchemy of this collaboration, joined by Hip Hop/Rap legend, Yasiin Bey who will perform in tribute to Scott-Heron’s ongoing influence.
