Our Leap branch gets together every Thursday from 9:30 am to 12 pm, and there’s always something interesting happening. It’s been fantastic to see this welcoming community grow!

Our Mackay members attended the launch of new community resources by the Mackay Domestic & Family Violence Integrated Service Team last week as part of Seniors Month 2026. They also enjoyed a good chat with Mayor Greg Williamson!

The resources aim to help prevent, recognise and respond to the abuse and mistreatment of older people, supporting safer communities for everyone as they age.

What is forum theatre?

Forum theatre is an interactive way of sharing real-life situations.

A short scene is performed, and audience members are invited to step in, share ideas and explore different ways the situation could play out.

A rich and inclusive experience where audience members are part of sharing ideas to generate change on issues explored in the performance.

Seniors Speak has brought people together to share experiences, connect with others, and explore what matters in their community.

Big moment for our team and community! We’ve received an Community Grant for Generations Together.

Missed this important conversation about elder abuse? OPAN brought together a panel of experts (Celebrate Ageing , Darwin Community Legal Service, National Older Women's Network Inc) to discuss recognising the signs of abuse, what to do if you are concerned about yourself or someone else, and where to find help and support.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, social and sexual abuse, as well as neglect. It can be difficult to speak up, particularly when the person causing harm is someone the older person knows and trusts.

We’re also proud to see our very own Beverly Baker from the National Older Women's Network Inc on the panel, bringing the perspective and voice of older women to this important discussion.

Last week, our newly appointed Management Committee took part in an engaging Governance Training session led by Gigi Lacey from Instinct Organisational Development

Drawing on her strong understanding of our organisation, how we operate, what we aspire to achieve and the environment in which we work, Gigi delivered practical, relevant guidance to strengthen effective governance.

The session explored the roles and responsibilities of committee members, ethical and informed decision-making, accountability, risk awareness, and the systems and processes needed to ensure OWNQ’s governance remains transparent, effective and aligned with our organisation’s purpose and strategic direction.

We also had lots of fun and laughs in the process!
