It was voted the most popular rose in the world in 2025, but you’ve probably never heard of it. Gertrude Jekyll was a famous garden designer and author, who has had a profound effect on the style of English gardens. She advocated incorporating roses in mixed borders and created over 400 picturesque gardens in the UK, Europe and America.

David Austin loved her so much he named a rose after her. Gertrude Jekyll was voted the best Rose in the World. We’ve got it, your nose will love it, it’s like sniffing a perfume bottle. It would be like sniffing David Beckham. Yes that made you laugh.

We’ve got our David Austin Roses in the nursery, every time I write a story about them we sell out. People are willing to drive from all over Sydney to buy them.

David Austin Roses are famous for their perfume. They are incredibly petalicious too. Yes I’ve invented that word. You need at least one in your garden, if you don’t own a garden grow your rose in a pot. Use our Tim’s Best Potting mix, it’s what we use.

💭 When do I need to re-pot a potted rose? 💭

A rose in a pot needs the same attention as any other rose in your garden.

After a few years of being in a pot, the rose is likely to develop a very strong and vigorous root system, and this will often be seen ‘above ground’, that is, in the rose plant’s foliage and flowers, as a distinct loss in vigour.

It means it’s time to repot it.

Take it out of the pot and reduce as much of the root ball as you can by pulling out the matted roots.

You can even cut some of the roots back to reduce the size of the root ball.

Plant it back into a larger pot with fresh potting mix and fertilise, mulch and water it well.

You should be rewarded with a more vigorous plant in the next season, that will continue for the next few years. 🌹
