Kuzuzangpo la!

Can countries modernise without losing their identity?
In Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, traffic is still directed manually by police officers, reflecting Bhutan’s unique approach to balancing development with cultural preservation.

Dzongkha is Bhutan’s national language, and
“Kadrinchey” means thank you.

Can patterns tell a political story?

The Palestinian keffiyeh is more than traditional dress, its fishnet pattern is often linked to the Mediterranean Sea and Palestinian fishermen, while the bold lines are associated with trade routes and resilience.

Over time, it evolved into an internationally recognised symbol of identity, solidarity, and political expression.

Ask an Expert … round 2️⃣!

With our first segment of Ask an Expert (all about terrorism and gender with Dr. Kiriloi Ingram) soon to be released to you this Friday, it’s time to announce the next topic and expert.

AIIA QLD’s next topic for the Ask an Expert series is ‘War and the ethics of conflict’.

Ready to answer your questions is Professor Alex J. Bellamy - Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland.

Your question could be about a particular conflict, a specific news story you’ve seen, an ethical dilemma about warfare, a historical case of war, or a theory about peace and conflict. Why do countries go to war? What’s the longest war in history? What laws protect civilians in war?

Submit your questions via the QR code or link in our story for Alex to answer!

And stay tuned for the release of Kiri’s answers later this week… ⏳

A look back at our recent seminar with Amitav Acharya, drawing on insights from The Once and Future World Order. 🌎

Together, we unpacked 5,000 years of global history to challenge the idea of a solely Western world order - and examined how shifting power, especially in the Indo-Pacific, is shaping a more plural “multiplex” future.

Thank you to all who attended, both in person and online, and to our cosponsor, Griffith University’s School of Government and International Relations.
Certainly a timely discussion for anyone thinking about global politics, multilateralism, and Australia’s evolving role in the world!
