⛈️ Changes to Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) will put Queensland, Australia’s most disaster impacted state, on a pathway to less Federal support for recovery.

🚜 Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers (QFVG) says the Fair Work Commission's latest wage decision will increase cost pressures for fruit and vegetable growers at a time when many businesses are already struggling to absorb rising input costs.

🎟️ CANEGROWERS invites you to celebrate the past, the present and the future of the cane industry as they mark 100 years of history, resilience, and community at their Centenary Gala Dinner at Brisbane City Hall on Thursday 29 October.

The Queensland Farmers’ Federation and its peak body members have labelled the Federal Government’s proposed changes to Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) as unacceptable, raising concerns that these moves will put Queensland, Australia’s most disaster impacted state, on a pathway to less Federal support for recovery.

Under the current Disaster Recovery Framework Arrangements, the funding split between the Commonwealth and the Queensland government is 65/35. The proposed changes would see this split move to 50/50, reflecting the Federal Government’s move away from supporting disaster recovery efforts in Queensland – including the recent decision not to support restocking for flood affected producers in the state’s north and the withdrawal of funding support for Disaster Relief Australia.

QFF CEO Jo Sheppard said Queenslanders will be worse off under the proposed changes that significantly impact the capacity of communities to recover from natural disasters.

“Queensland is Australia’s most disaster impacted state experiencing approximately 60% of the nation’s natural disaster events and bearing a disproportionate share of the associated costs,” Ms Sheppard said.

“This new framework will not deliver a fair or sustainable outcome for Queensland but will leave farmers and communities without the support they need to recover, stripping away vital assistance at the very moment Queenslanders are most vulnerable.”

💡 QFF's Water and Energy Policy Committee Chair Michael Murray joined Megan Hughes on today's ABC Rural Queensland Country Hour to discuss what the Queensland Competition Authority's regulated prices for regional electricity will mean for Queensland farmers.

Electricity prices in regional Queensland are set to drop by about 8.1 per cent for small businesses from next month.

Michael discussed the importance of farmers selecting the right tariff to drive their electricity costs down, the need to increase the large business customer threshold from 100 megawatt hours per annum to 160 megawatt hours per annum, and the support QFF's free Energy Information Service for Landholders (EISL) can provide farmers as they navigate their tariff options and other energy related matters.

The EISL is a free phone service for farmers and landholders in Queensland and can assist by providing up to date and accurate information on a range of energy matters. The free phone service is available from Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Call 07 3329 7500 or visit the QFF project page to learn more 👉 https://bit.ly/4agIxNG

The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) and its peak body members, CANEGROWERS, Cotton Australia, Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers, eastAUSmilk and Greenlife Industry QLD, have outlined the top priorities for Queensland agriculture ahead of this year’s state government budget which will be delivered on Tuesday, 23 June.

QFF CEO Jo Sheppard said that on the back of a disappointing federal budget for agriculture, Queensland farmers are looking to their state government to uplift dwindling farm business confidence stemming from significant cost pressures, including increases in fuel, fertiliser and labour costs.

Key requests from QFF and its peak body members include the application of genuine Lower Bound pricing for rural irrigation water charges, the removal of stamp duty on crop insurance and similar agricultural income protection insurance policies, and a further investment in the highly regarded, industry-led SmartAg Queensland training program.
