Driven by his father’s legacy and his own lived experience as a refugee fleeing war, Dr Joseph Yunis’ work at The University of Queensland is personal and far-reaching.

A Research Fellow at ’s Child Health Research Centre and the Frazer Institute, Dr Yunis is leading research that sits at the intersection of cutting-edge cancer immunotherapy and community health education impact.

In his role as the Lead mRNA Cancer Vaccine Scientist at the Ian Frazer Centre for Children’s Immunotherapy Research, Dr Yunis’ focus is on a powerful question: how can we better train the immune system to fight disease?

Central to this work is the development of next-generation mRNA cancer vaccines for children and young people with sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

While the science is complex, the motivation behind it is deeply personal and community focused.

Alongside Dr Yunis’ research, he also founded the Yunis Abusodur Organisation Inc, a not-for-profit named after his father.

The organisation is dedicated to improving access to education, health and leadership opportunities for students and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; including refugee and migrant students, many of whom face challenges such as interrupted schooling, language barriers and limited access to mentoring.

Yunis Abusodur Organisation Inc celebrates a milestone that represents courage, opportunity, resilience, and the power of community.

Congratulations to the very first graduates of the Closing the Gap: Towards a Future in STEM for Refugee and Migrant Youth program — a groundbreaking initiative empowering young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to explore pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Over the course of the program, students engaged in hands-on laboratory workshops, microscopy, cancer immunology activities, scientific data analysis, and mentorship from researchers, university students, and community leaders at the The University of Queensland and the Translational Research Institute.

These graduates are not only future STEM leaders — they are role models for the next generation. Their success demonstrates what is possible when communities, universities, mentors, volunteers, and families come together to create access and opportunity.

We acknowledge the incredible support of tutors, volunteers, parents, sponsors, and community partners whose dedication helped make this vision a reality. Special thanks to the passionate mentors and professionals who inspired students to believe in their potential and pursue futures in STEM.

This is only the beginning.
Today’s graduates are opening doors for many more young people to follow.

🌟 Celebrating a Milestone: Our First Community STEM Program Success!

What an incredible journey it has been! We are proud to announce the successful completion of our first out of two workshops. This program was funded by the Queensland Government. It is the first-ever Community-Led Hands-On STEM Program—that specifically targets students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, refugee and asylum seeker families, low income and underrepresented. It is a powerful step towards inspiring the next generation of scientists, innovators, and leaders.

From the very beginning, this program was built on a vision:
👉 To bring science into the community
👉 To create hands-on, real-world learning experiences
👉 To empower students from all backgrounds to see themselves in STEM

Over the course of the program, students didn’t just learn science—they experienced it. From exploring how the immune system fights cancer, to engaging in interactive experiments and collaborative problem-solving, the energy, curiosity, and passion in the room were truly inspiring.
