NEW ROCKS AND LANDSCAPES BOOK JUST RELEASED

Exploring Rocks and Landscapes in the Etheridge Region –
Geology and geotrails around Mount Surprise, Georgetown,
Forsayth, Einasleigh and Croydon

The Etheridge region in the hinterland of north Queensland is based
on some of the oldest rocks of Queensland, and it also has an
interesting history.

This book is the first attempt to distil this complex geological history
for a non-specialist audience.

The author, Ian Withnall, worked for many years across the district
for the Geological Survey of Queensland. The book firstly
summarises the sequence of events that built up the Georgetown
Inlier from 1700 to 1400 million years ago, possibly during the
assembly of the ancient Nuna Supercontinent. Other chapters
describe the much younger that occur in the region, and the
mining history.

The next section describes four geologic wonders that many
travellers visit each year, namely the Undara Lava Tubes, Cobbold
Gorge, Talaroo Hot Springs, and Copperfield Gorge.

A major chapter accompanied by detailed maps suggests
excursions or Geotrails where you can see more of the rocks and
, areas and some historical mines.
The simplified treatment makes the book a must for locals and
visitors alike, particularly those interested in fossicking, as well as
geologists wanting an overview.

It extends the coverage of previous Rocks and Landscapes books
over other parts of Queensland.

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS

The GSAQ runs a long-standing project preparing hashtag and hashtag sets for schools. Over 1,200 sets have been dispatched around the globe to secondary hashtag to help hashtag learn about the joys of the earth sciences. These sets illustrate hashtag , hashtag and hashtag rock, and mineral suites.

This fantastic initiative is managed by Mr Tony Shellshear, a Brisbane-based geologist, and over the last ten years Tony has been supported by many hashtag with many aspects of the project. It’s time for Tony to step down from the role of managing and co-ordinating this program. The GSAQ is excited to call for volunteers to help with a range of tasks to continue the program, including:

• Order Management – Enquiries, orders, invoicing, tracking and authorisation for delivery.
• Stock Management – Sourcing and maintaining stocks of the required materials for the sets.
• Materials Preparation – Sorting, slicing and dicing to specimen size to fit the set boxes.
• Set Assembly – Placing the samples in boxes and attaching labels.
• Set Dispatch – Padding and packing sets for freight and sending them off or arranging for the purchasers to collect them.

Typically, GSAQ receives 2–3 orders per month. The most time and effort are required when new sets have to be prepared. This process is achieved by organising divisional working bees on weekends.

GSAQ is looking for volunteers to take on the various roles within the program. Tony has kindly agreed to help new volunteers learn what is involved and continue to store all materials for the sets.

Anyone can join this important educational initiative. If you are interested, please contact the GSAQ committee, or Tony directly, to understand more or to register your services:

GSA-Qld is proud to host an upcoming technical talk by Emeritus Professor Stephen Cox of the ANU.

📅 Date: Tuesday, September 30th 2025
🕒 Time: 5:30pm for drinks and nibbles; talk starts at 6:00pm
📍 Location: QUT Gardens point, P Block, Room P421
🎙️ Topic: Shock and ore: links between deep crustal fluid migration, earthquake swarms and ore deposits

Abstract:

Active faults provide transiently permeable fluid pathways that allow the episodic escape of fluids from deep crustal reservoirs towards the Earth’s surface. In the process of migration, changes in the pressure and temperature of these fluids, as well as reactions with wall rocks, can lead to the formation of ore deposits. This process involves large fluxes of highly pressurised fluids through intrinsically low permeability host rocks.
Deep fluid injection experiments, along with natural, fluid-driven earthquake swarms, demonstrate that injection of highly pressurised fluids into low permeability rock produces distinctive, migratory earthquake swarms that typically involve many thousands of small earthquakes. This contrasts with more typical crustal seismicity in which tectonic loading drives mainshock-aftershock sequences. These fluid-driven swarms are providing remarkable new insights about the extreme dynamics of ore formation in active fault zones.
This work has implications, not only for mineral exploration, but also for development of geothermal energy resources, potential pitfalls associated with deep sequestration strategies, and for our understanding of seismic hazards and the escape of volatiles, such as CO2, from the Earth’s interior.

Speaker bio:

Stephen Cox is an Emeritus Professor in the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University. His research interests are primarily in the coupling between deformation processes and fluid flow at depth in the Earth’s crust, with applications to ore genesis and earthquake mechanics. His research is pursued via field-based studies, microstructural, microchemical and stable isotope analyses, high-pressure/high-temperature rock deformation experiments and numerical modelling. His current research focusses on analysis of fluid-driven earthquake swarms and applications of that work to understanding formation of fracture-controlled ore deposits.
Stephen holds a BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Tasmania and a PhD degree from Monash University. Over several decades he has provided structural geology training to the minerals industry. He was the Society of Economic Geologists Distinguished Lecturer in 2007. He was awarded the Hobbs Medal by the Geological Society of Australia in 2010 and the Haddon Forrester King Medal by the Australian Academy of Science in 2024.
