The outpouring of love and support for our beautiful Atticus Finch has been truly overwhelming. I have read every single heartfelt comment, message and tribute, and we appreciate each and every one of you more than words can say.

A broken heart takes time to heal, but knowing just how deeply loved our little curly top was brings comfort amongst the sadness. Atticus touched so many hearts in his short life, and seeing the love shared for him reminds us how special he truly was.

Thank you for always standing beside the animal residents of Freedom Hill Sanctuary, through the joy, the heartbreak and everything in between. Your kindness, compassion and support mean the world to us.

This afternoon we said goodbye to our beautiful gentle boy, Atticus Finch.

Born with a deformed back leg, Atticus came into this world already facing challenges most never will. We hoped surgery could help him, but it wasn’t possible, so prosthetics became the next step. We tried, Atticus tried, but he simply could not accept the leg no matter how much we wished otherwise.

In a couple of weeks Atticus would have turned two. In that short time he grew into such a big boy — our cuddly boy, our gentle giant. He loved with his whole heart and lived with a strength that inspired everyone who met him.

But as Atticus grew, so did the burden on his body. The weight he carried placed unbearable pressure on his remaining legs and arthritis slowly stole the comfort and movement he deserved. Watching him struggle to walk broke our hearts in ways words cannot explain.

Today we helped Atticus cross the rainbow bridge, where his body is no longer failing him. Now he can run freely, stretch his legs without pain, continue to grow strong and whole, reunite with friends, and eat as many bananas as he wants.

Atticus was such a social soul. He adored being around everyone, wrapping you in those enormous slobbery licks that covered your entire arm. His beautiful big eyes, those impossibly long lashes, and his incredible determination to keep living happily despite everything life handed him will stay with us forever.

Some souls leave footprints far bigger than their time here, and Atticus was one of them.

Forever in our hearts, Atticus Finch.
Run free, darling boy.

Until we meet again, sweetheart 🤍

Yesterday brought the rain, long and steady, soaking the paddocks and washing the world clean. Today was the complete opposite… no rain, no wind, just the kind of gentle afternoon sunshine that makes everyone feel a little brighter.

Prime time for Baby Conrad and Sadie to head out exploring, tiny legs busy, noses curious, bouncing through their Sunday adventure together. Every puddle, every patch of grass and every little discovery seemed far too important to miss.

Sometimes the simplest days turn out to be the best ones. ☀️🐑

Gus didn’t have a plan for the evening… other than existing in full Gus fashion.

One moment he’s caught mid-yawn, completely unbothered by the world, stretching it out like he owns time itself. The next—just a subtle shift—half-lidded side eye, as if to say, “Yes, I saw you watching… and yes, I approve your presence, barely.”

No drama. No performance. Just Gus being Gus.

And honestly, that’s enough.

There’s always a difference in opinions on rainy days at the sanctuary.

Today the rain arrived long and steady, soaking the earth properly at last. Every paddock, every tree and every tired patch of ground quietly drinking it in. The kind of rain you can almost hear the land thanking.

While the weather settled in for the day, Simi the maremma made her opinion very clear by planting herself firmly on the lounge and refusing to move. No patrols, no farm duties, no interest in the outside world whatsoever.

Meanwhile Sadie and Conrad decided the perfect use of my time would be finishing the painting of Woody the horse. They seemed quite invested in supervising the situation… unfortunately the painting still remains unfinished.

And then, as always, the rain eased and life gently returned to normal. The quiet business of sanctuary life resumed, little feet moving through wet grass, the crows holding long conversations with each other overhead, and another day slowly finding its end.

Some seek shelter, some seek adventure, and some simply watch the world go by. Everyone has their own way of spending a rainy day.

Some souls just know how to make you smile… and Carey Grant the goat is definitely one of them 😂
Always prancing around like he owns the place, Carey has now graduated from the younger goats and moved in with the “big kids” — and he is absolutely living for it. Head held high, bouncing around like he’s top dog, making sure everyone notices him as he struts past.
Maybe babysitting and mentoring the younger goats just wasn’t really his cup of tea. Either way, Carey has embraced his new chapter with enthusiasm, confidence and a grin that’s impossible not to smile back at.
Animals really do have a way of reminding us to find joy in the little things and, as Carey would say… “always look on the bright side of life” 😂

On the 1st of July 2011, a tiny orphaned lamb named Lynn entered the world and unknowingly changed ours forever. He became our very first rescue. At the time, we thought we were simply saving one little life… but Lynn was about to teach us so much more.

Already vegan and deeply aware of the suffering farm animals endure, we watched Lynn grow into the most beautiful soul. He played with the dogs, squeezed himself into their kennels when it rained, and interacted with both humans and his dog friends as though he was one of them.

Lynn showed us something the world too often refuses to see — that sheep are not “livestock.” They are individuals with personalities, emotions, friendships and a deep capacity for love and trust. No different to the dogs and cats we share our homes with.

Watching Lynn live his life with such joy and innocence planted a seed in our hearts. We realised being vegan was not enough for us anymore. We needed to do more. Lynn needed friends. And from that simple beginning, Freedom Hill Sanctuary was born.

Now, 15 years later, Lynn sadly passed away two years ago, but his legacy lives on in the almost 300 rescued animals who now call Freedom Hill home. Every single life here exists because one little orphaned lamb opened our eyes even wider and changed the direction of our lives forever.

Lynn’s story is proof that compassion creates change. That one life matters. And that all farm animals deserve the same love, safety and kindness we so freely give to cats and dogs.

Though Lynn is no longer beside us, we remember him every day in every life saved, every gentle soul protected, and every animal finally given the love he taught us all to see.

They were never meant to survive there.

Today both Trinity and Poppy were back at the vet again… another cruel flare of cat flu from the place they came from. A place that should never have been allowed to exist in the condition it did.

Back onto antibiotics they go, with little Poppy struggling the most this time. We are hoping desperately to see improvements soon.

This is the heartbreaking reality of overcrowded, unmanaged cat colonies. Even after rescue, the damage doesn’t simply disappear. Their tiny immune systems carry the scars of neglect long after they leave it behind.

Without rescue…
Without medical care…
Without safe homes…

Their chances of survival would have been painfully slim, if at all.

Instead, they were given a chance to finally know warmth, full bellies, gentle hands, and safety. A chance every life deserves.

The road for these kittens has not been easy, and for some it continues to be a battle, but they are no longer suffering unseen.

Please desex.
Please seek help before numbers become unmanageable.
Because love without responsibility can so quickly become suffering.

One week old today, little Bill is discovering the world one tiny adventure at a time. ❤️

Yesterday the sun made a welcome appearance, but the winter winds still carried a bitter chill. Wrapped snugly in his little wind jacket, Bill ventured outside to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine.

His outing wasn’t a long one—the cold wind is no friend to a young lamb—but for those few precious moments he stood in the sunshine, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of sanctuary life. Before long, it was back inside to warmth, comfort, and plenty of cuddles.

It’s hard to believe that just one week ago this tiny boy entered the world. Now he’s growing stronger every day, full of curiosity, confidence, and sweetness.

As the sun begins to slip below the horizon and the last golden light lingers across the paddocks, Helen settles herself into her bale of hay for the evening.

Our beautiful blind girl cannot see the colours painted across the sky or watch the day draw to a close. Yet somehow, she still knows. She hears the birds singing their final songs, feels the coolness of the evening air arrive, and senses the peaceful rhythm that comes when the sanctuary begins to quieten for the night.

As she sits contentedly chewing her hay, I often find myself wondering what Helen thinks about. Does she remember the gentle voices she trusts? Does she find comfort in the familiar sounds around her? Or perhaps she simply lives in the moment, grateful for the warmth, the safety, and another day well spent.

There is something so beautiful about watching Helen at peace. She reminds us that not every sunset needs to be seen to be felt.

Sometimes the most beautiful things in life are experienced not through our eyes, but through our hearts.
