An African proverb - It takes a village to raise a child. Here Sandgate Mens Shed delivers and installs one of many bird and possum boxes but we are continuing our “Little Hands Big Projects” program of regular visits. The children might develop some woodwork skills but the men might learn about the enthusiasm and imagination of children. Isn’t that Win Win?

As we roll into 2026, Sandgate Mens Shed is consolidating the Little Hands Big Projects initiative commenced in 2025. We share the excitement of the children as they move to pre-school in a week or two. It’s been really rewarding to be part of the skills growth and social development which have markedly advanced in just the short weeks since out first visit in November.

Comfort birds are given to those in need as a token of support and kindness. They symbolise peace, hope and goodwill. This consignment of birds and hearts is destined for clients of the North Lakes Palliative Care Service / Metro North Health Service.

The huon pine birds on the right were created from demolished buildings and is estimated at over 200 years old.

The waiting list will be happy. Sandgate Men’s Shed Famous Flowers have passed through our colour finishing facility and will be assembled into a Christmas stock this week. They are popular so get in quick.

Our Despatch Department is busy organising transport of our marquee, tables and woodwork and out Famous Flowers to BYB Backyard Bonanza to be held this Sunday at Macpherson Park Bracken Ridge 9-2. Fingers crossed for a great turnout of people. It’s always a fantastic family event.

The next batch of our Famous Flowers are nearing completion in our Colour Finishing Facility. Sales will begin at @ BYB Bracken Ridge Backyard Bonanza to be held at Macpherson Park Bracken Ridge Lions Train Day this Sunday 24 August 2025. See you all there, it’s an awesome event.

As a place to share skills, the Sandgate Men’s shed has created Makin Chips - a carving group open to any Shed member - where we learn skills like timber selection, use and sharpening tools, design, finishing and presentation. Examples of our work were exhibited at # Sandgate Art Society Easter Art Show. Makin Chips has a collaboration with Bramble Bay Women’s Shed meeting on Wednesday afternoons.

Makin Chips wood carving group at Sandgate Men’s Shed is working on a small piece program. Recently we completed several Huon Pine dry bud vases showing the shapes and texturing finished with Porters Paint and wax. Maybe the flower arranging shows our romantic leanings in the approach to Valentines Day.

Suicides are don’t happen to strangers, it the past 4 months, I know of 4 suicides. Four men each lost an average of 32.5 years life expectancy, left devistated families and potential economic hardship for the survivors.
