For the first time in many years, the mezuzos of our shule have been checked, and today we began affixing them again, starting with the main entrance, which now features a beautiful golden aluminium mezuzah case that is also weather resistant.
The importance of mezuzah
The Rambam writes that ”a person must be extremely scrupulous in the mitzvah of mezuzah, for it is an obligation that rests upon everyone at all times” — so that each time we come and go, we encounter the Oneness of Hashem’s Name (Hilchos Mezuzah 6:13).
The Ramban adds that one who buys a mezuzah for a silver zuz, affixes it to his doorpost, and reflects on its meaning has thereby acknowledged the creation of the world, the Creator’s knowledge and His Providence, prophecy, and indeed every fundamental principle of the Torah (Shemos 13:16).
As seen, the power of the mitzvah of mezuzah has a great impact on the house and shule where they are placed.
*More new mezuzot needed*
Sadly, a large number of our mezuzos were found to be no longer suitable or have been damaged beyond repair and cannot be re-affixed. Some of them are undergoing repair, but most will need to be replaced.
