It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the loss of a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) firefighter, who was killed while on duty at a bushfire in Bulahdelah on Sunday night.

Despite the best efforts of fellow firefighters and NSW Ambulance Paramedics, the member tragically passed away at the scene after being struck by a tree.

While they wore a different uniform, the loss of a fellow emergency service worker is felt keenly by all of us in the firefighting community. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and NPWS colleagues of the fallen firefighter during this incredibly difficult time.

Events like this can stir up strong emotions, particularly for those who have had similar experiences or have been otherwise impacted. Please take care of yourselves and look out for one another in the coming days.

Significant lightning has been experienced across NSW over the past 24 hours, particularly this evening (Monday). Further storms with dry lightning and little moisture are forecast each afternoon over the next few days, particularly west of the Great Dividing Range.

With increased fire danger this week, if you are in bush fire prone areas, remain vigilant and report unattended fires to Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Thunderstorms are developing to the west of our district with a Severe Thunderstorm Warning now issued for western half of our area for Damaging Winds. Be on the lookout for fires which may start as result of lightning with elevated fire risk over the coming days.

With rainfall between 0mm to 110mm across the district over the weekend, don’t be complacent. Grassland fuel loads dry out rapidly with hot windy conditions, grass fires can started and spread quickly.

If you hold a valid fire permit and are considering lighting a fire over the long weekend please know YOUR responsibilities.

If you do not have the equipment or ability to control, contain and completely extinguish your fire, then please do not light up 🔥🚫

⚠️ Before lighting the fire ensure that:

✅️ it can be contained and controlled within the specified area

✅️ it does not contain toxic materials, such as rubber tyres, plastics, paint etc; and it must not cause an air pollution problem by producing excessive amounts of smoke.

⚠️ If you have a permit, it is your responsibility to:

✅️ check if a Total Fire Ban is in force or the Fire Danger Rating is HIGH or above. If it is, your permit is automatically SUSPENDED.

✅️ check the expected weather conditions, taking note of the temperature, wind and Fire Danger Rating.

✅️ notify and check with your local RFS Fire Control Centre prior to lighting.

✅️ follow ALL conditions and restrictions listed in your permit.

There are simple things you can do to make sure you use fire safely on your property and avoid becoming the fire risk to your community.
