Who wore it better?

As part of our pre-phase HAZMAT training, recruits are required to don and doff the HAZMAT splash suits correctly. As well as learning how to fold and pack them away in a teeny, tiny, compact bag and stow them on the truck. IYKYK.

Vote for your favourite recruit! Extra points for guessing who they are!

ROAD CRASH RESCUE:

As part of our Primary Rescue qualifications, our crew are required to undertake Road crash Rescue training.

This involves using our Hydraulic Rescue tools and learning various techniques to access patients in vehicles that have been damaged.

Definitely no easy feat, but one that needs knowledge, skill and precision to complete.

Here we have 2 of our crew members using one of our hydraulic tools; shears, to cut through the door hinge of a car.

Won’t be long until you see these 2 crew members out on the road displaying their Rescue epaulettes.

New recruits:

Over the last few months, we have had 3 new recruits coming through the ranks.

One has completed his initial firefighter training (Phase training) and is now qualified firefighter.

Our other 2 recruits are currently undertaking pre-phase studies and practical work to prepare them for their upcoming training.

It’s all hands on deck within our mentoring program, to support, guide and share our knowledge to help build capable firefighters to join our crew on the truck.

Shipping standpipes, hose bowling and branch work was on the agenda this week.

HAY SHED FIRE:

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the 237 crew were called to assist RFS with a hay shed fire at Oswald.

On arrival, the hay shed was fully involved. Our crew assisted RFS in containing the fire.

We were also assisted by bulk water tankers from Greta and Lochinvar RFS.

RFS were left on scene to continue to monitor the hot spots and mop up the area.

NSW Ambulance were also on scene to monitor firefighter welfare.

Our Branxton Crew spent the afternoon at the Postie Bike GP in Cessnock yesterday, chatting to people from far and wide about our role as Fire And Rescue firefighters, having water fights with the little and big kids, and spreading the word about recruitment and how to join the crew and support the community.

Thanks for having us!

❗️Did you know❗️

🔥 Bushfire Season is here 🔥

Fire and Rescue take part in HAZARD REDUCTION BURNS. This is a planned activity that reduces the risk and impact of potential bushfires in the local area. This objective reduces the fuel load, the height of the flames and the intensity of any subsequent bushfire.

Over the weekend, 2 of our crew (YTG!) were tasked to Stanford Merthyr in Light Tanker 237 to assist other Fire and Rescue crews, and RFS with a hazard reduction burn of approximately 66 Hectares.

Conditions proved to be challenging, with the lack of wind not in our favour, and the wet ground making it difficult for the fire to take hold. However, crews were able to adapt and make the day successful, reducing the fuel load and potential impact of bushfire in the coming months.

Now is the time to prepare your home for the Bushfire season. Remove any flammable materials from your yard, clean out your gutters, check your hoses and make sure you have a bushfire survival plan in place.

We LOVE to visit our local schools and preschools!

Thank you to Bees Nees Early Learning for asking us to visit today!

During the month of September, the children have been learning about their centres emergency safety drills and putting into practice what they have learnt. Today they followed up with a visit from our 237 crew and the fire truck!

We touched on who to call in an emergency, the importance of having a special meeting place to make sure everyone is safe and to STOP, DROP, COVER and ROLL.

The children also had the opportunity to sit in the fire truck and have a turn on the hose!

Thank you for having us Bees Nees!
