At the 2026 presentation evening we were delighted to hear from past BDEF recipients who shared their experiences and reflected on how the foundation supported their educational journeys:

•Luke McGrath (2020/2022) – Certificate IV in Building and Construction
•Isabella Hart (2016) – Bachelor of Agricultural Science
• Rachel Farley (2010/2011) – Bachelor of International Studies & Bachelor of Communications and Media Studies

It was wonderful to hear their stories and see the lasting impact BDEF support has had on their pathways

We were very grateful to hear from our guest speaker Julian Davies at the 2026 BDEF Presentation Evening.

Julian has volunteered in education within our community for the last twenty years. After growing up in Melbourne, New Zealand, Thailand and Canberra, he settled on the Gourock Range near Braidwood 47 years ago and has been trying to shed his reputation as a “blow-in” ever since.

A writer and artist, Julian has written seven novels and two non-fiction books. His involvement with Braidwood Central School began when his daughters attended from Kindergarten through to Year 12. Starting by supporting students with reading and arithmetic, he later mentored students in public speaking and debating, and went on to develop highly effective media studies and critical thinking programs.

In 2021, Julian established the Consensus Education Foundation, a charity with strong roots in our region. Through a wonderful partnership with Community Bank Braidwood, the foundation now teaches critical thinking across the state; from the far west, through metropolitan Sydney, and as far as Lord Howe Island.

Thank you, Julian, for sharing your story and inspiring our students and community.

Recently committee member of the Lodge of Truth, Phil Shoemark presented the Braidwood and District Education Foundation with a donation of $2,000. Phil said “The Lodge have been strong supporters of the Education Foundation for many years and realise the significance it makes to the youth in the community in the next chapter of their educational journey”.

“Since its inception in 2004, the BDEF has assisted over 350 local students thanks to the generosity of organisations such as the Lodge, individuals, business and community groups, philanthropic organisations and local churches.” “Our youth are fortunate to know that they have the support of the community behind them”, Nick Fry Chair of BDEF said.
