MIC was proud to deliver another successful event for multicultural communities in Manningham.

A big thank you to Milla Galea from The Orange Door for an insightful session on family and domestic violence, helping participants learn about available supports, referral pathways, and multilingual resources. Many participants shared that this was their first introduction to The Orange Door, highlighting the importance of raising awareness through the Working Together Project.

We also thank Noha O Aly for facilitating a meaningful art therapy session, providing a safe and creative space for reflection and healing.

Special thanks to Manningham Uniting Church and Community Centre for hosting us in such a welcoming environment, and Rayhoon Restaurant for the delicious catering.

A huge thanks to Steph for your ongoing support throughout the event, and to everyone who attended and contributed to such a meaningful day for our community.

A big thank you to Remy, Community Education Officer from Metro Trains Melbourne for delivering a fantastic train safety session for our Chinese community.

Participants learned important tips for staying safe while travelling on trains and gained confidence in using public transport independently to access services, activities, and opportunities in the community.

Thank you also to Jessica and our amazing volunteers for helping make the session such a success. Your support helps create stronger, more connected communities.

Community engagement is one of the most effective ways to raise awareness about the serious issues affecting our communities.

It was wonderful to see the Hakha Chin community come together at Victorian Chin Baptist Church for a vibrant and meaningful Family Fun Day. The event created a safe and welcoming space for connection, learning, and support.

During the event, ECASA presented and discussed referral pathways and the services available for community members experiencing sexual assault or seeking support and information. These conversations are so important in building awareness, trust, and access to help within culturally diverse communities.

One of the highlights of the day was the makeup tutorial session led by a talented makeup artist from the Hakha Chin community. Having someone who spoke the language and understood the culture made the session incredibly engaging, inclusive, and enjoyable for participants. While the session was taking place, the men also had an opportunity to spend quality time together, strengthening friendships and community connections.

A heartfelt thank you to Our Village for generously providing self-care packs for participants. The packs were very well received and added a thoughtful touch to the day.

May is Family Violence Prevention Month, a vital time to reflect on the role each of us plays in ending family and gender-based violence.

In Australia, one in four women has experienced family violence since the age of 15, and nearly one million children have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. These are not just statistics, they represent lives, families, and communities impacted every day.

At the Migrant Information Centre, we recognise that people from migrant and refugee backgrounds may face additional barriers when seeking support including language, isolation, and access to services. That’s why creating safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive spaces for conversation is so important. There are more initiatives taking place under the Working Together Project. Please continue to follow our social media channels for more updates.

Are You Safe at Home? Day invites all of us individuals, workplaces, and communities to take a simple but powerful step: ask, “Are you safe at home?”

When we ask with care, we help break isolation.
When we listen without judgement, we create safety.
When we believe, we empower.

Meaningful change starts with conversations. By speaking up, challenging stigma, and supporting one another, we can help prevent violence before it occurs.

Every death, every injury from family and gender-based violence is preventable.

Successful information session with the Karen community!

It was wonderful to see such strong attendance during the school holiday period. Community members expressed genuine appreciation for this informative session, especially as these topics are not often openly discussed.

MIC and ECASA (Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault) Eastern Health came together to facilitate a thoughtful and respectful conversation around consent and referral pathways as part of the Working Together Project. As a result, community members are now more aware of the services available to them in the event of sexual assault or other related concerns within their community.

Despite the sensitivity of the topic, the session was held in a warm and welcoming environment, complemented by delicious food and the beautiful setting of the community garden.

A sincere thank you to ECASA for your presence and valuable contribution. This marks another successful collaboration.

We also shared translated materials in the Karen language, translated by MIC, to ensure accessibility for the community.

A wonderful day of learning, connection and new experiences for our newly arrived participants from Myanmar ✨

As part of our Living in Australia Program, participants explored Australia’s democratic values, legal system and parliamentary system. To bring this learning to life, we organised a group visit to Parliament so they could see firsthand how it all works.

The trip was also a great opportunity to build confidence using public transport, strengthen social connections, and help participants get to know one another as they settle into their new community.

Supporting new arrivals to feel informed, connected and empowered is what community is all about. 💙

ANZAC Day is a time to pause, reflect and remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served, and those who continue to serve.

It is also a time to recognise the values of mateship, resilience and community that continue to shape Australia today.

We also acknowledge the many people from migrant and refugee backgrounds who have contributed to Australia’s story, including through service, sacrifice and strengthening our communities.

At Migrant Information Centre, we value inclusion, respect and bringing communities together.

Lest We Forget.

We’re proud to share the success of the Zomi Community Family Day, held at Ringwood Community Centre and organised by MIC.

The event brought together families for a vibrant day of connection, featuring engaging activities for children and meaningful opportunities for parents to connect. A community BBQ created a welcoming space for everyone to come together and build stronger relationships.

A key highlight of the day was a productive and insightful conversation with ECASA Eastern Health focusing on understanding consent and exploring referral pathways. This session forms part of the Working Together Initiative, one of 12 community information sessions designed to engage and support diverse communities.

We are also pleased to announce that MIC officially launched the “What is Consent” resource in the Zomi language originally developed by ECASA making this vital information more accessible to the Zomi community. You can access the other translated documents here: https://www.easternhealth.org.au/ecasa-resources/

It was inspiring to see such strong participation and openness to learning, sharing, and growing together. Events like these strengthen community bonds and empower individuals with knowledge and resources that make a real difference.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this day a success. We look forward to continuing this important work with our communities.
