At the time of posting (15 Sept.) there are 9.5 weeks until the 2026 Annual Highlands Garden Society Rose Show. Every year it's a highlight showing AND it's also the AGM of the Society, a quorum of which is 30 financial (paid up!) members. It was handed down to me as lore that your roses need there main feed some 7 weeks out, on or about the Labour Day Long Weekend.
The Event: FRIDAY 20th November
Entries: 8.30am to 10.00am
Judging: 10.15-11.45am
Open for viewing by members and public: Noon - 3.00pm
Guest Speaker: Lillian Barry (The Scent of Old Roses) - 2.00pm
HGSB AGM: 3.00pm followed by AFTERNOON TEA!
Members will receive the Schedule below with the next edition of the Highlands Garden Bulletin. But for those keen to plan their entries early, here it is. As with the recent Camellia & Spring Flower show, scan through this Schedule NOW and note the categories for which your garden has what's needed. More details in the October meeting.
If you have never yet exhibited, well there's only one first time! It really is much simpler than you think. Just put in an entry in any of the 23 possible classes of roses (which includes a special section of 3 Classes for Novice entrants) or five classes of floral art, plus a separate novice class of floral art. It enriches the show, improves the spectacle and altogether shows what it is to be part of a Society focused on the enjoyment of flowers and gardens in our wonderful Southern Highlands.
So get cracking! Remember you must have been growing these roses for a minimum of 3 months. Secure your supplies of Neutrog Sudden Impact for Roses and READ THE SCHEDULE! Wishing everyone well in coming weeks. (Remember never water the leaves of your roses, just the lower stems and roots - gentle, long ,soaking nourishment, never a quick shower. Avoid Leaf burn (if it's hot) and/or black spot, if it's humid.)
