Adaptive Strategies Adaptive Strategies NQ is a Clinical Psychology service provider in the Whitsundays /Bowen / Burdeki

Clinical Psychology & Allied Health Practice

We specialise in providing evidence based treatments focused on improving mental well-being in children, adolescents, adults and elderly. Our team works with wide range of mental health presentations including: anxiety, depression, trauma, neurodevelopmental disorders (including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder), general/workplace stress, life transi

tions, pain management and parenting difficulties. We are trained in different psychological interventions including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions (e.g., thoughts, beliefs, attitudes) and behaviours improving emotion regulation, and the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies in combination with commitment and behaviour-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) integrates techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy with ideas taken from evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, mindful practice and neuroscience. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive, client-centred counselling style for eliciting behaviour change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment approach which combines standard cognitive-behavioural techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness derived from contemplative meditative practice.

This is what can happen when we let hashtag into our homes, especially when it interacts with our kids. Thank you Heat Initiative for this powerful PSA on just how dangerous hashtag can be.

Right now there are no guardrails in place to protect our children from AI, and the risks are real:

🤖 3 in 4 teens have reported using AI chatbots
🤖 AI chatbots were rolled out to millions of American children untested
🤖 children and young adults have died turning to these platforms for support
🤖within 2 years, AI chatbots have been responsible for 14 deaths

We learned from hashtag what happens without oversight. We can't make that mistake again with AI. We need comprehensive AI hashtag now to protect families. States like New York, Illinois, Tennessee, and Utah are passing protections — but a federal preemption would strip away states’ power to act.

Heat Initiative, Parents Together Foundation and Design It For Us have launched a petition to stop Washington from blocking AI safety protections.

Research indicates that the mental health of children and adolescents has declined since the year 2000. Research also indicates adolescents are spending, on average, 5 hours per day on devices. Girls tend to spend most device time on social media. Boys tend to spend most of their device time gaming. Too much device time appears to be correlated with increased anxiety & mental health concerns, poor ability to strive, negative body image, and reduced coping skills. Individual parents often struggle to implement device-time reduction strategies because their child's peers are not subject to similar restrictions. Collective action involving parents, schools and the community is needed. Lets move towards some collective action on this issue in the Whitsundays:

1. No smartphones before 14 (non-smartphones only)
2. No social media before 16
3. No phones in schools
4. No unrestricted device time
5. More independence, responsibility, out-of-home activities and free play.

We can spend all our time looking back but that doesn’t help us move forward. Today's reminder is that although we cannot change the past, we can still change the future.
