The next meeting of the Bothwell Historic Society will be at the Bothwell Vistors Centre, on the 14th of September, starting at 6.30 pm.
This is an AGM as well as a General Meeting.
Bring a plate of food to share.
We need a new Secretary. Garry Parker has done a great job, but wants to move on, so please consider.
A few proposed changes to the Consitutation are also to be voted on.
Proposed excursions, update on the formation of a new cemetry committee will also be discussed.
Hope to see you there.

Did you listen to ABC radio on Thursday evening with Lucie Cutter, when they interviewed Jo and Gordon re the history of Bothwell duel and its re enactment? Around 9.40pm ish
If anyone knows of a way to post a link for this conversation to this page, I would appreciate it.

The second renactment of the Bothwell duel happened today, on the anniversary of the duel.
Once again it was "fought" in behind St Lukes in the grave yard.
The witnesses for this years event had doubled from last year.
The fair Venus the duel was for, was missing.
The duel was believed to fought over Matilda King in 1849, the daughter of Captain King.
And is the only known duel known to be fought in Tasmania.
And the raspberry jam... well it may be the first recorded use of special effects in Tasmania?

Grim and Grisly tales anyone?
Today is the anniversary of the death by excution of infamous murderer/cannibal/convict, Alexander Pearce on 1824.
During researching whether he had ever been to Bothwell, I found two different suggestions.
One was that after his escape from the penal colony Sarah Island, he was given shelter from fellow Irish Shepards in the Bothwell area.
The other is he absconded again from the Bothwell/ Ouse area where he was working as a shephard.
Alexander was born 1790 in Mongham Ireland.
He was sent to Van Diemens land for seven years for theft.
By his own confession he turned to cannabilism of his fellow escapees to survive the harsh Tasmanian enviroment.
When he was captured after his last escape, he was found with the remains of fellow escape Thomas Cox in his possesion.
He was hung this day in Hobart Town.
One wonders how he was received around this area, during its own early settlement.

I do not claim to be an expert on Alexander Pearce, but tales of his evil deeds, were part of my childhood.

Next meeting of the excutive board will be on the second Monday of the month.
Any suggstions from members, that you would discussed , please forward to the exuctive members.
Also thank you to people who have already put your hand up about the Cemetry Comitee. Your names will be fowarded at this meeting.

Are you interested in preserving and possible restroration of the historic graves in the cemetery?
The Bothwell Historic Society is trying to gauge interest in the reforming or forming of a Cemetry Comitee?

For those interested and or able to attend.
This Tuesday the 16th of June, starting at 9am, at the Bothwell Council Chambers, there will be a council meeting that will include discussion of the future of the building of St Michaels and All Angels Church.
This is a building of historical signifigance to Bothwell which was deconscrated last year.
