Did you know the South-western Snake-necked Turtle, or “Choonya” in Noongar language, is one of south-west WA’s only native freshwater turtles? These incredible turtles play an important role in keeping our wetlands and waterways healthy, but they are facing increasing threats from habitat loss, road crossings, fox predation and drying wetlands.
During Makuru the Noongar season of cold fronts, rainfall and rising water levels wetlands begin to refill and turtles become more active across the landscape. This makes it a great time to keep an eye out near creeks, wetlands, farm dams and roads after rain.

If you spot a South-western Snake-necked Turtle, you can help conservation efforts by recording your sighting through the TurtleSAT app. Community sightings help researchers better understand turtle movements, nesting areas and threats across the south-west.

Visit the TurtleSAT website to learn more and download the TurtleSAT app. Record your sightings to help protect this vulnerable species. 🐢

Lead researchers, DPIRD's Daniel Real and Paul Sanford, will cover:

✅Carrying capacity increases from ~9DSE/ha for winter and spring, to 10 DSE/ha all year round
✅Which pasture and forage mixes performed best across key seasonal feed gaps
✅How alternative species can help manage variable seasons and smooth feed supply

It’s the first Friday of June therefore it’s another official Farm Dog Friday 🐾🌱

From supervising freshly ripped revegetation sites to helping with rock picking duties, farm dogs are always close by when there is work to be done!

Russell & Chilli have been hard at work as the 2026 Rock Picking Crew, while Marlowe kept himself entertained with a branch during air seeder repairs 😂

Whether they are riding in the ute, following along in the paddock, keeping an eye on the team or there to welcome you home at the end of the day. Farm dogs truely are a part of everyday life on the land.

Makuru is apon us and we can’t be the only ones feeling this cold 🥶 This season is known for its fertility, yet also marking our coldest & wettest time of year in the Great Southern.

It indicates the start of the breeding period for many species, including wardong (ravens), Mali (black swans) and for many farmers our lambs come too.

Historically this is a time when our Noongar ancestors would move inland and thrive within the plentiful creek lines hunting turtle eggs and so much more! 🐢🍃

We are well into the second year of our Classroom to Paddock: Enriching NSP Culture & Diversity project.

This term, we’ve been working alongside the senior room students at both Borden and Ongerup Primary Schools, exploring the incredible Marra Bilya (Pallinup River) and learning about the importance of healthy waterways.

Students investigated how our waterways have changed over time through changing land use practices, while also discovering the key indicators of a thriving river system. This term’s focus has been on turbidity and macroinvertebrates and it’s safe to say, we may have a few future environmental scientists in the making! 🌱🏞️

This project is funded through the WA State Government’s State Natural Resource Management program.

May 15th, Endangered Species Day. Today we are shining light on the WA’s iconic Black Cockatoos. The Carnaby’s and Baudin’s Black Cockatoos are listed as endangered, facing threats such as habitat loss, land clearing & limited nesting hollows.

These beautiful birds play an important role in healthy ecosystems across our Great Southern Landscape, and the broader South-West WA.

We can help them out by planting native seeds & seedlings, protecting native trees, reporting our sightings & caring for our local bush-lands.

Taking these steps ensures that these species remain part of our landscape for generations to come!

To wrap up our awesome selection of trees from the last month. Our project officer Sam highlights some trees she loves from near & far.

1. A pincushion Hakea! (Hakea laurina) - a tree endemic to the south-west corner of WA. Another gem amongst all WA’s beautiful flora.
2. Snow Gums! (Eucalyptus pauciflora) an incredibly resilient species of the Australian alpine region. Withstanding harsh snow and winds.
3 & 4. Central desert Ghost Gums! (Corymbia aparrerinja) these cool trees have root system that tap into the water table and as Sam is pictured you can put your ear up to them and hear the water gushing through their trunks. A pretty amazing sound when hiking through the dry arid central part of Australia.
5 & 6. Karri Trees! (Eucalyptus diversicolor) these beauties are Australia’s tallest tree. Towering up to 50-70 metres, some even marked to be 90!
7. The Cazneaux Tree, a beautiful River Red Gum. (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) standing proud in the Ikara-Flinders Rangers National Park, South Australia. This tree is historically & famously know for its photograph titles ‘the spirit of endurance’ in 1937 and still stands tall today.
8. “The big gum at home”, a tree that makes our cottage feel warm & kind. A tree that I hope never falls and stays forever
