Time to talk GRASS!

…and why burning it is so integral to the work we do at Quoll Headquarters.

While winter might not always be our favourite times when it comes to those cold and windy mornings, our native wildlife absolutely love it.

The birds take advantage of the cooler days and feed throughout, our smaller marsupials like antechinus and bandicoots are also a lot more active, and let’s not forget the quolls!

At this time of year the boys are up and at ‘em, fattening themselves up for the breeding season, and always (and we mean always) keeping a look out for the ladies 😘.

Every year, as we come into winter, our boy Quolls start prepping for the breeding season. They become very active searching for all the calories they can in order to fatten themselves up for a... very active period.

This gives us a unique opportunity to document them - as it’s the only time of year when they’re consistently out during the day, as well as at night.

After some promising trail camera footage we got to work setting up a camera trap - knowing the clock was ticking and it might be a whole other year before we saw our mate so active again.

After no action the first couple of weeks we were ready to pack it in, but decided there was no harm in leaving things set up a little longer.

Well, we were not disappointed.

Turns out this log in particular is a bit of a Quoll highway, and very heavily used.

‘Safe travels, old mate. Make it count.’ With a bit of luck, it’ll be his kids crossing this log come next winter.

Steve was on ABC Radio talking quolls, habitat, and and the efforts we're making to protect our native wildlife.

There are likely fewer than 10,000 Spotted-tailed Quolls left across mainland Australia and Tasmania. At those numbers, every single animal counts.

If you're a landholder wondering how to help, there's a simple answer: habitat. Quolls won't settle for second-rate bush. They want old growth, complex under-storey, logs on the ground, healthy creek systems. If you've got a back paddock of good bushland that is the perfect habitat for not just quolls but other threatened species. And if you've already got quolls are in your area, it means your habitat is genuinely good.

Have a listen. 🎧

1000 sanctuaries, and a combined total of 96,500 hectares.

The Wildlife Land Trust Australia, run by Humane World for Animals Australia, has just welcomed its 1000th member property. It's a national network of landowners who are committed to protecting native wildlife, and Quoll HQ is proud to be part of it.

We were featured in the announcement, and Steve summed it up best:

"The Wildlife Land Trust was the first conservation organisation to recognise Quoll Headquarters as a wildlife sanctuary. Many years later, many other organisations have followed."

That early vote of confidence is a big part of why we're still here.

📻 Steve's on ABC NSW radio TOMORROW - Monday 20th July, 10:35am. Tune in then 😁

After a devastating bushfire in 2019 that destroyed all of our Casuarinas and Banksias the juvenile trees that germinated after that fire are finally in seed and bloom.

That means our magnificent Glossy Black Cockatoos and Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos are back and feeding on these trees! It’s such a relief and beautiful sight to see and hear them throughout our recovering forest.
