These incredible falls, whilst often barely flowing, are a real treat after heavy rains. Situated on Stony Creek in the King Valley, the area also hosts several other tricky to access waterfalls.

An Aside...

The "Buxton Gum" aka "Victorian Silver Gum" (scientifically known as Eucalyptus crenulata) is a rare, critically endangered Australian tree found almost exclusively in the Acheron River Valley and at the Spadonis Reserve, Yarra Glen in Victoria.
It is distinct for keeping its rounded, heart-shaped juvenile leaves throughout its entire life, rather than developing the long, adult leaves typical of most gums.
Other unusual and fascinating facts about this species include:

Ancient Underground Bunkers: Following severe bushfires in 2009, scientists discovered that these trees possess massive underground tubers (called lignotubers).
Radiocarbon dating revealed these underground systems are between 500 to 1,000 years old, meaning the trees are effectively ancient, regenerating survivors.

Fire and Flood Dependency:
For the Buxton Gum to regenerate and thrive, it ironically requires both severe fires to open seed pods and heavy flooding to create the perfect soil conditions.

Endangered in the Wild, Common in Gardens:
While it is listed as a critically endangered species in the wild, you are far more likely to find the Buxton Silver Gum planted in suburban parks, gardens, and floristry trades due to its striking silvery foliage.

*Footnote..

Located in Yering, Victoria, Spadonis Reserve is a tranquil, lesser-known oasis tucked along the Yarra River (Birrarung). It features rich Indigenous history, unique ecosystems, and stunning views of the Christmas Hills.

The reserve is one of only two places on the entire planet where the Buxton Gum (a highly localized Eucalyptus) naturally grows.

Having been an editor now for the last 6 months and my partner and I having shared to the page for nearly two years this photo that my partner took of me today at Woolshed Falls encapsulates everything I love, surrounded by nature, capturing moments through photography, and sharing it all with my partner πŸ₯°β€

Not too far upstream of the Cobungra River, the Victoria River enters a steep gorge; forming the Victoria Falls at the top. A beautiful area of our high country.
