The Lower Murray barrages will be closed for much of next week to help reduce the risk of saltwater entering the lakes during forecast severe weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for strong north-westerly winds, ahead of a strong cold front.

It is likely the barrages will be kept closed during periods of forecasted high swells (up to 5m), and during strong winds, to help reduce the risk of saltwater getting into the lakes and increasing salinity levels.
