Blackwood Action Group

Blackwood Action Group In April 2009 some local Blackwood residents were concerned at the poor appearance of the Blackwood shopping precinct and surrounding areas.

A Meeting of like-minded residents was called and Blackwood Action Group (BAG) was conceived. The Blackwood Action Group (BAG) is a community service organisation dedicated to:
~ Improving the natural, built, human and social environments of the Blackwood district.
~ Promoting a strong sense of local community pride and well-being.
~ Providing a forum for the community to explore relevant loca

l issues. We undertake specific local projects and collaborate with others to enhance the amenity of the district for the community’s enjoyment.

Rescheduled: Clean Up Australia Day - Blackwood

The weather forecast for Sunday is currently looking ominous, with an anticipated 10-45mm of rain. While the rain is much needed, it doesn't make for the best conditions for our annual Clean Up Australia Day event.

BAG has decided to CANCEL this Sunday and reschedule the event for Sunday 15th of March. At 8:45AM from the Blackwood Railway Station, Garden Carpark.

If you can still make it, we would love to have you join us! It is a great opportunity to spruce up Blackwood - and have some fun at the same time.

What an incredible result from the Blackwood Action Group’s Christmas Tree Festival!

With amazing support from volunteers, local businesses, community groups, and the City of Mitcham, the two-day event welcomed over 1,200 visitors, featured 42 beautifully decorated trees, and offered plenty of affordable family fun and handmade goodies. Volunteers gave hundreds of hours to make it all happen — a true community effort.

Most importantly, the festival raised much-needed funds for our local emergency services. BAG was proud to donate $5,000 to the Sturt Group Fire and Emergency Fund and $3,000 to the Sturt SES Group. The SES will use the funds to purchase specialist first aid kits, helping volunteers reach and care for people in difficult terrain.

A fantastic effort by the whole community — thank you to everyone who helped make it happen!

BAG would like to congratulate our current President, Brian Ferris, on being awarded the City of Mitcham's Active Citizen of the Year!

Brian’s commitment to volunteer service has been an important part of his life. He has been involved in a variety of Mitcham hills volunteer community groups, undertaking leadership roles in many groups including Blackwood Neighbourhood Watch, Blackwood Action Group, Rotary Club of Coromandel Valley, Blackwood Winemakers and Brewers Club and the Blackwood Memorial Hall Committee.

His engagement has not only helped raise funds for significant projects locally and internationally but importantly has helped build a sense of community pride, connectivity and volunteer service in the hills area of the City of Mitcham.

Last Monday, more than 500 locals gathered at Hawthorndene Oval on to celebrate 100 years since DJ Hewett gifted the oval to the community. A particular highlight of the day were the children getting involved in classic games like tug-o-war, egg-and-spoon races and maypole dancing.

A huge thank you to the Hawthorndene 100 Committee, City of Mitcham, local businesses, community groups, and volunteers who made the day so special.
