🏠 Housing and Young People: What’s Really Going On

This Youth Homelessness Matters Day, let’s start with the facts that help us understand, and solve, youth homelessness.

Safe housing for young people depends on strong systems:
Young people most commonly experience homelessness because key systems fail to keep them safe, including family violence, poverty, housing shortages, and gaps between child protection, education, and housing systems.

Temporary arrangements don’t equal safety or stability:
When young people move between couches or short‑term arrangements, they are experiencing housing insecurity, not support. Without stable housing, it is harder to stay in education, maintain employment, or feel safe.

Services are doing their best, within real constraints:
Youth homelessness services are working hard, but demand far exceeds capacity. Without enough affordable housing and long‑term options, services are forced into crisis response rather than prevention.

Youth homelessness is a community issue:
This is not a marginal problem affecting “other people.” Any young person can be impacted when systems don’t provide stability, protection, and opportunity during critical life transitions.

🧡 At Marist180, we work alongside young people to restore what the system has disrupted, safety, connection, and pathways into stable housing.

📢 This Youth Homelessness Matters Day, let’s focus the conversation where it belongs:
on stronger systems, safe housing, and shared responsibility, because youth homelessness is preventable.

Every young person deserves a safe place to call home. Over the past year, 192 young people have been supported through our crisis and transitional programs, and that support continues today for young people in crisis accommodation and transitional housing.

Coming up on April 15, Youth Homelessness Matters Day serves as a reminder that no young person should face homelessness alone, and that lasting change starts with all of us.

Take action this Youth Homelessness Matters Day by signing the "A Place to Call Home" petition and supporting a better future for young people across NSW experiencing homelessness: https://homelessnessnsw.org.au/aplacetocallhome/get-involved/sign-the-petition/

Food has a beautiful way of bringing people together 🧡

Yesterday, our team celebrated Harmony Day by sharing dishes from their cultures, and with them, stories, traditions, and connection.

Harmony Week reminds us that 'Everyone Belongs', and moments like these help us build a stronger, more inclusive community for the young people we support.

We also recognise the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and our shared responsibility to stand against racism in all its forms.

Together, we continue to build a community where everyone feels respected, valued, and that they truly belong.

Happy International Women’s Day 2026 💜

Today we celebrate the women of Marist180 and women everywhere.

Different roles.
Different expertise.
One shared purpose.

When women give their time, skills and leadership, futures expand.

Giving is not subtraction.
It is intentional multiplication.

Today we recognise World Care Day, a powerful celebration of young people in care: their resilience, their voices, and their journeys.

At Marist180, we stand with care-experienced young people, celebrating every milestone and supporting each step forward. Together, we can help break barriers and amplify every story of courage and achievement.
One of those stories is Maggie’s.

“I was 18 years old when I first came into contact with Marist180, and at the time I was living in a crisis refuge. I was looking for long-term accommodation where I could have stability and safety. I learned what it was like to trust the people around me again because, up until that point, I didn’t trust anyone. I was very closed off. Over time, I learned that the people there genuinely wanted to help and support me. Marist180 gave me that sense of belonging, safety, security and stability. Without Marist180, I wouldn’t have had that back then.”

Maggie’s journey shows the power of breaking down barriers: from fear and isolation to trust, safety, and opportunity. With the right support, young people in care can overcome obstacles, build stability, and create brighter futures.

This World Care Day, we celebrate the strength of young people like Maggie and reaffirm our commitment to walking alongside every young person in care, today and every day 💜
