After 6 months of supporting young people through our peer-led programs in Laidley QLD, we partnered with Kambu Health, a culturally safe, early intervention service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

Since Kambu Health began generously providing space for our local Weekly Support Groups, we’ve seen 5 additional young people referred into our program. These young people were previously disengaged from peers and struggling at school, and through Support Group, have started to expand their social networks and build connection.

Creating culturally safe spaces is central to our work at Youth Insearch. This partnership with Kambu not only strengthens that commitment, but enables us to better support the local community together, reaching more young people and building stronger, more connected communities.

At just 14, after experiencing violence at home and bullying at school, Kayla* attended her first Youth Insearch Weekend Workshop, a turning point that began to change her life 💙

Surrounded by peers with shared lived experience, she began to feel safe, heard, and seen. “It changed me for the better.”

Today, through Leadership Training, Kayla is transforming her lived experience into her strength, using what she has overcome to support other young people through adversity.

“In the future, I hope to give people the same chance I got, to give them somewhere they can feel safe.”

This EOFY, your support can help more young people like Kayla access the safe, peer-led support that helped change her life.

At a recent Support Group in Tara QLD, our Program team introduced Jenga with “this or that” questions to help break the ice for our participants 💙

Young people got to know each other in a relaxed way sharing laughs, questions and random opinions on questions like "summer or winter?"

Connection doesn’t always start with deep conversations. Sometimes it starts with laughter, shared awkwardness, and realising you’re not the only one who feels nervous walking into a room full of strangers.

Activities like this help create a safe, welcoming space where young people can have fun, feel comfortable being themselves, and build meaningful connections.

This week, our team came together across communities to be for National Reconciliation Week 💙

In Queensland, we were proud to take part in a local Reconciliation Day alongside Tara State School and Tara State College, connecting with local police, the Rural Fire Brigade, and the Tara Community Centre.

In Brisbane, our team attended the National Sorry Day ceremony at Teralba Park, an important opportunity to reflect, pay respect, and acknowledge the ongoing impact of the Stolen Generations.

In Victoria and New South Wales, we reflected on what Reconciliation means to us and how we as a team can continue to be more inclusive in our practices as we support young people and their families.

We recognise that reconciliation is not a single moment, but an ongoing commitment. We are grateful to be part of these spaces and conversations, and to continue learning alongside the communities we serve

Kayleb was one of ten Leaders who recently travelled to Melbourne to complete Larita Academy’s four-day immersive workshop ➡️ https://bit.ly/4v7aZcU

This experience is designed to connect young people with business mentors and expand their sense of what’s possible for their future.

"Larita had a positive impact on me and my employment confidence to push me into finding my career rather than being stuck in the same job" said Kayleb.

Over the course of the workshop, Kayleb built a clearer sense of direction, identifying where he wants to take his next steps. "I want to start expanding my career into the mental health industry more".

Our partnership with Larita Academy exists to help our young leaders build confidence, gain a sense of direction, and begin to take ownership of what comes next 💙

In 2021, was honoured to receive this artwork gifted by Barry Swan, an Aboriginal Youth Support Worker with our Moree team at the time.

“The painting is how I see Youth Insearch — from the centre out.”

Barry’s work captures the essence of our organisation: connection, growth, and the impact of lived experience. Alongside the painting, he shared the meaning behind each element, offering a deeply personal reflection of community, culture, and healing.

As we mark 40 years of Youth Insearch, sharing Barry’s artwork during Reconciliation Week feels especially significant. It reminds us of who we are, the stories that shape us, and the journey we continue together.

When Jade* first joined her local Support Group, she hadn’t left her house for around 10 months. She was being homeschooled, had a small social network and wasn't seeing many friends. But with the encouragement and support of her mum, Jade took a brave step and engaged with our program.

3 months later, Jade’s confidence has grown noticeably. She now takes on a caring role within the group, checking in on other participants and making sure no one feels left out or alone. Jade has also begun reconnecting with friends and spending more time socialising during school holidays.

Despite navigating challenges along the way, we see Jade smiling more, showing kindness to others, and growing into herself 💙
