Thank you to all the members of the Shipley, Blackheath/Mt Victoria Rural Fire Brigade, Medlow Bath Rural Fire Brigade and Megalong Valley Rural Fire Brigades for once again turning up to support the Anzac Day services at Blackheath today. Your presence is deeply valued in the community.
Supporting Anzac Day at a local level is vital. It reinforces the connection between service, sacrifice and community—values that both the Anzac tradition and the Rural Fire Service embody. Seeing local brigades represented alongside those who serve their country reminds us that service is not just something of the past, but something that continues every day through volunteers who stand ready to protect their neighbours. Your commitment helps ensure these commemorations remain grounded within our community, are passed on to younger generations, and honour those that have served or who are still serving with the dignity and respect they deserve.

May we never forget those who serve.

Lest we forget.

"Cold Windy Weather from Friday 19th July through to Sunday For Blue Mountains”

As advised by the BoM, winds are expected to increase throughout Friday and sustain very strong gusts across the Blue Mountains until Sunday.
- Wind gusts in Katoomba may exceed 80 kph which may cause damage.
- There is also a chance of some rain (not snow) on Saturday morning.
- Residents are advised to check yards and balconies and to secure any loose items such as gardening tools and toys.
- It is also highly recommended that if you have a trampoline that it should be pegged or tied down.
- Trim and branches or trees that are close to your home to prevent any possible damage the winds may cause.
- If you are planning to be outdoors over the next few days, ensure you have adequate warm clothing as the apparent air temperature may be below zero degrees.

If you experience any wind damage, contact the SES on 132500 at anytime.

"Cold Weather from Sunday 14th July Expected”

Our weather forecast modelling is showing that the Blue Mountains region is expecting to be impacted by increased cold air movement that is being generated by a low-pressure system in the Tasman Sea. It is highly likely that this will generate snow for the Central Tablelands especially in the Oberon region on Sunday night into Monday.

There is only a small chance (10%) that the snow may fall in the Blue Mountains LGA. However, the cold conditions may lead to the forming of ice on surfaces (also known as ‘black ice’). Icy conditions make it dangerous to drive on roads in these conditions, especially just before dawn.

As it is school holidays, and people are enjoying our fantastic outdoors, be mindful if bushwalking or camping to have appropriate cold weather clothing. Whilst the temperature will be down to about 1 degrees in Katoomba, we are expecting strong cold winds which makes it feel like -5 degrees.

NAIDOC Week, held each year from 7th to 14th July, celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Each year, NAIDOC festivities are underpinned by a theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee. The theme for 2024 is “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud”.

The theme is a reclamation of narratives, amplification of voices and honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. Fire symbolising of connection to Country, to kin and the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures culture and "Blak, Loud and Proud" encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to stand tall in their heritage.

Through our collective efforts, we can forge a future where the stories, traditions, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are cherished and celebrated, enriching the fabric of the nation with the oldest living culture in the world.

RFS is observing NAIDOC Week with a series of communications, the release of an exciting resource to better understand and show respect to the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters within the areas we operate and a presence at multiple community events across the state.
