Rose’s Story of Transformation

Before joining the Comprehensive Response for Vulnerable Children (CORC) Project, implemented by the Salvation Army Uganda, Rose faced extreme hardship. As a single mother, she struggled to provide food, school materials, and healthcare for her children.

In 2021, she joined a Village, Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) and began saving from her casual labour income. With her first loan of 20,000 UGX, she started a sugarcane selling business, which quickly generated profits and helped her provide regular meals for her family.

Using savings, loans, and skills gained through CORC trainings, Rose expanded into a secondhand children’s clothing business, and later purchased a goat and a calf. Today, her clothing business has grown significantly, she owns livestock, pays school fees, provides for her family, and enjoys a more stable life. The project also equipped her with knowledge on parenting, helping her build a safer and stronger home for her children.

Through the CORC project, Rose was supported to build sustainable income, strengthen her family’s wellbeing, and create a brighter future for her children. Her story is a powerful example of the lasting, community-led impact of the

Australian Aid: Helping Dreams Become Reality

Ben, a 22 year old participant in the SIKaP project in the , recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation.

Before joining the SIKaP project, Ben’s family faced ongoing financial hardship, relying mainly on seasonal farming income, with his sister contributing through a minimum wage job. Despite their efforts, the family struggled to meet their daily needs.

Through the SIKaP project – implemented by The Salvation Army, Philippines, Ben received educational support that helped cover tuition, accommodation, uniforms, and other school related expenses. When financial challenges nearly forced him to stop studying, SIKaP’s continued support enabled him to stay in school and successfully complete his degree.

Earlier this year, Ben shared that, “SIKaP affected my life greatly, especially now that I am about to begin my work this March. There are still expenses in our family, but it has lessened now. I will finally get to live my dream and help my family at the same time.”

Following his graduation, Ben began working on a ship, turning his long held dream into reality. This opportunity allows him to apply the knowledge and skills gained through his studies, while supporting his family.

Ayida’s Story:

Before the WASH Food Security & Resilience project in installed a bore water hole in Ayida’s community, her family faced daily struggles just to access water. They would wake up before sunrise and walk long distances to an unprotected well, often waiting for hours to fetch water. The long journeys often caused her children to miss school, and her family was frequently impacted by waterborne diseases, resulting in costly medical services.

Today, life looks very different. With access to clean, safe water right in her community, Ayida no longer spends hours each day fetching water. Her family is healthier, with fewer cases of waterborne diseases, and the money once spent on medical treatment can now be used for school supplies and other household needs.

The borehole has also given Ayida more time to focus on farming, caring for her family, and participating in community activities. Her children can attend school regularly, and even during the dry season, her family has reliable and safe access to water.

Access to clean water changes everything. Through this partnership, Ayida’s family and community have the foundation for better health, greater stability, and new opportunities.

Zadock, a farmer from Kenya, has experienced significant transformation through his involvement in the Agriculture for Community Empowerment (ACE) Project implemented by SAID's partner, The Salvation Army Kenya West. Before joining the project, Zadock relied on traditional farming methods, resulting in low productivity and limited household food security. Like many farmers in the region, he faced increasing climate pressures, including unpredictable rainfall, soil degradation, and crop losses.

Through ACE training, Zadock adopted climate-smart agriculture techniques such as terracing, mulching, crop rotation, minimum tillage, and integrated pest management. These practices have enabled him to better conserve soil moisture, reduce erosion, and improve crop health.

As a result, Zadock reports that his crop yields have doubled or even tripled over time, significantly improving his household’s food security. His family now produces most of its own vegetables through a diversified kitchen garden, reducing reliance on markets and improving nutrition.

Beyond his own farm, Zadock has become a lead farmer, using his land as a demonstration site to train and mentor other farmers in his community. His increased confidence and independence are evident in his decision to decline additional project support for his own farm, instead encouraging resources to be directed to others.

Working together for stronger communities in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands

Earlier this year, SAID partnered with Salvation Army PNG and Solomon Island officers and development staff to strengthen their Territorial Community Development Strategy - a roadmap for positive, long term change.

Through open dialogue and a two day workshop, staff and leadership reflected on what’s working, where growth is needed, and how TSA’s mission and values guide community development. By working together, we’re aligning efforts around a common goal: Gudpela Sindaun / Gud Stap meaning fullness of life, for communities that the Salvation Army is working in.

By equipping, enabling and empowering communities across education, health and social justice, and by listening closely to local voices, communities are better placed to identify their needs, speak out, and lead their own development.

When staff, leadership and partners collaborate with a shared vision, meaningful and lasting community change becomes possible.

When the WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene): Food Security and Resilience Program began in Kenya – funded by The Salvation Army Australia and implemented though our partner The Salvation Army Kenya East Territory, the local school children lacked access to clean drinking water, and the learning environment was poor.

Through the program, the community learned that improving water access required structural upgrades. Empowered with new advocacy skills introduced by the program, the community organised themselves and approached their Member of Parliament to request support. Their collective voice and efforts succeeded: five classrooms were renovated with new roofs and iron sheets, walls were painted and floors tiled, creating a safe and functional environment for the students.

These upgrades unlocked the full potential of the WASH program. Rainwater harvesting systems were installed, giving students access to clean drinking water for the first time. The impact has been transformative: improved health, reduced absenteeism and renewed confidence in local leadership. Parents and teachers report a stronger sense of ownership and pride, and the community now sees advocacy as a powerful tool for driving development.
