WE NEED YOU! Bingie Brigade is recruiting πŸš’

Ever wondered what your local RFS brigade actually does? It’s a lot more than fighting bushfires. Here’s a snapshot of what our volunteers get up to:

πŸ”₯ Firefighting & Emergency Response

Bush and grass fires
Vehicle fires and accident support
Supporting other agencies during structure fires, storms, floods and other emergencies
Deploying to help other communities across NSW

🌿 Prevention & Preparation

Hazard reduction burns to reduce fuel loads before the season
Helping residents understand their bush fire risk
Assisting elderly and less-mobile residents to prepare their properties

🀝 Community Education & Engagement

Helping households complete their bush fire property plans
Get Ready Weekends, open days and local events
Being a friendly, familiar face in our community

πŸ‘₯ Roles for every skill set (not everyone fights fires!)

Firefighters (bush and structural)
Truck drivers and crew leaders
Radio and communications operators
Community engagement and education
Catering and logistics (keeping crews fed and supplied is vital!)
Administration, secretary, treasurer and fundraising
Leadership, training and mentoring
Maintenance of trucks, equipment and the station

βœ… No experience needed. Full training is provided, along with your uniform and protective gear.
βœ… Flexible commitment. Give what time you can.
βœ… Learn new skills, make great mates, and make a real difference in your local community.

The Bingie Brigade train weekly and have general meetings once a month. You can message us here on Facebook to get involved, or read more about volunteering and register your interest at: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/volunteer

Did you know that the Southcoast Health & Sustainability Alliance (SHASA) are creating community‑based places that offer localised support for vulnerable people during heat and bushfire smoke events?

The 'Heat and Smoke Havens' sit alongside the Eurobodalla Shire’s official emergency centres.

If you are an older person, have a baby, illness or disability, check out the website linked here:

🟒 🟑 Australia Fire Danger Rating System 🟠 πŸ”΄

You will see the AFDRS used across Australia to communicate bushfire risk and safety actions to the public.

The ratings are displayed on roadside and community signs, on official emergency websites, in the media on weather or news broadcasts and radio updates. The system is also used by businesses, land managers and schools to assess safety risks and to plan or restrict high-risk activities.

Bingie has a road sign that is updated each morning by your local RFS volunteers when they receive the forecasts from HQ. You can also access the forecast for the Far South Coast here:

πŸ”—https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans

Fire Danger Ratings give you clear actions to take. The higher the rating is, the more dangerous the conditions will be. You can use the Fire Danger Ratings as a trigger for action in your bush fire survival plan.

The AIDER (Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents) program is a free, one-off service which supports some of our most at-risk community members.

The program helps people live more safely and confidently in their home in areas where bush fires may start.

AIDER services can include:

🏠 clearing gutters
🌳 thinning vegetation around the home
πŸ‚ removing leaf and tree debris
πŸͺš trimming branches from close to the home
🌱 mowing or slashing long grass.

If you would like to know more about the free, one-off AIDER service, call 1300 011 737, or email [email protected], or download our fact sheet and fill in the form at this link:

Getting ready for a bush fire is easier than you think. Review your bush fire survival plan so you know exactly what to do when a fire threatens your property.

What will be your sign to leave? Is it when conditions are dangerous, such as during catastrophic fire danger days, or when there is smoke in your area? Don’t wait until you can see flames before you make a decision.

Where will you and your family go to stay safe? Your family may not be together when you decide to leave, so it’s important to organise a meeting place. Not all evacuation centres cater for pets, so if you have pets, consider places that allow them to stay too.

Plan what you will take in advance and consider keeping a go-bag so you’re ready to move quickly. Remember to bring important documents such as passports and birth certificates and medical prescriptions.

It’s important to let others know your movements. Neighbours, friends, and family are a great start. During a bush fire event, roads may close without warning. Take note of alternate routes in case your usual route is blocked.
