Shannon Garrett Hiking Challenge - TDMB for Children's Brain Cancer

Shannon Garrett Hiking Challenge - TDMB for Children's Brain Cancer I’m Shannon Garrett, and I’m battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer called DMG. Despite the challenges, I consider myself one of the lucky ones.

But for many children and their families, the reality is far more devastating.

Hey everyone

We just wanted to give an update for everyone about the state that Dad (shannon) is in. He is currently been moved into Palliative Care at the Alfred with the focus to be on making dad comfortable. Unfortunately it's hard for dad to open up his eyes and with the one he can open, his eye sight is very limited. We feel just with his current state, it would be best to contact us directly.

Malik ph: 0476 297 584
Arlyah ph: 0448259123
Jason ph: 0437 075 751

You can contact us for updates, but please understand we are also spending quality time with Dad.
If you wish to come and visit, please send one of us a message to make sure the room isnt overflowing with visitors

Please also feel free to send through messages you want us to read out to Dad or voice memos/videos to play out loud

At the moment Dad is at the Alfred visiting hours are 10am-8pm just keep in mind that he might not be fully awake or aware but he can still hear

Thanks Garrett family

I got a shock when I saw this photo… and yeah, there were some tears. It looks like a man defeated. And I won’t lie — it is getting tough.

Radiotherapy is finished. I’m headed back into hospital due to some concerns, and I’m learning (slowly) that hospital admissions are just part of the fight now. That’s a hard thing to accept, but it’s reality.

What this photo doesn’t show is that I’m still here. I’m still fighting. I’m still determined to do whatever I can — for myself, and for the kids and families facing DMG every single day.

This disease is brutal. It takes quickly. It doesn’t care who you are.

But I’m not done yet. One step, one setback, one admission at a time — we keep going.

Those stats are from 2025.
Fast forward to 2026, and the reality is very different.

Right now, I have no use of my legs. I struggle to get out of bed most days due to extreme fatigue. Not because I stopped fighting, training, or caring — but because DMG keeps taking, relentlessly.

This disease doesn’t care how fit you were, how disciplined you are, or how hard you push. It doesn’t negotiate.

And that is exactly why awareness, research, and funding through is so critical. Families facing this deserve better than statistics and timelines.

I am not done yet.
If anything, this just creates another opportunity to raise awareness, push harder, and raise more funds for the kids and their families.

We keep going.

Well… radiotherapy is definitely doing something 😅

I’ve lost a lot more hair and now have a very respectable bald patch making an appearance. It’s going quick now.

No refunds. No delays. No warning signs.
Just another reminder that nothing about this ride is subtle 😂

Update – Ride for Lucy has commenced

Ride for Lucy has officially begun.

The plan was that this would be my next challenge — another way to raise awareness and funds. As my health deteriorated, that plan shifted from me riding, to riding on a tandem bike with my son… and ultimately to one of the hardest messages I’ve had to send — messaging Scott to say, I’m out.

I want to impress upon everyone, especially those who may not realise what goes on behind the scenes, that fundraisers like this don’t just “happen”. Having just completed a major fundraiser myself, I can tell you they come at great personal expense — physically, emotionally, financially. They require enormous energy, months of training, sacrifice, dedication, and plenty of blood, sweat, and tears.
And here’s the thing — Scott and the team are back doing it again.
For a second time.

Absolute legends. They have my utmost respect. I only wish I could be offering more than words and support from the sidelines.

So this is what I can do: shine a light on these legends and ask everyone reading this to dig deep — for the kids, for their families, and in recognition of the incredible effort Scott and the Ride for Lucy team are putting in.
Please support them if you can. It matters more than you know. ❤️
