🦇 A life-saving mission in the face of devastation. 💚

In our biggest rescue operation to date, our team at WoollyButt Wildlife Rescue worked tirelessly to rescue over 41 bat pups, many of whom were abandoned and injured due to the devastating flooding and cyclone in Katherine and Pine Creek.

While some didn’t make it, we were able to provide these resilient babies with the chance at life they deserve. They’ve been checked by Wild North Veterinary Hospital and are now in the care of experienced bat carers. Once they are healthy, they will be released back into the wild, where they belong.

This rescue was emotionally taxing for our volunteers, as the scene was heart-wrenching. Many casualties could’ve been avoided if people had acted sooner and reported the injured bats. We urge you to call us immediately if you come across an injured or sick bat.

Motherhood doesn’t always look the way people expect.

Some mothers raise children.
Some raise orphaned joeys in pouches stitched with love.
Some bottle-feed tiny possums through the night.
Some care for dogs, cats, horses, birds, and every other creature that depends on them.
Some pour their hearts into nurturing lives with fur, feathers, scales, or wings.

At Woollybutt, we know that being a mother isn’t defined by biology. It’s defined by love, patience, sacrifice, and the instinct to protect and nurture another life.

Being a mum is about the love you give, the lives you protect, and the comfort you provide. Whether you’re raising children, caring for rescued wildlife, or sharing your home with beloved fur babies, the bond is real and the love is unconditional.

Today, we celebrate every kind of mother and every person who gives unconditional love to the animals and people in their care.

A century on this planet… and somehow you still look at it with more wonder than most people who have only just arrived.

100 years of Sir David Attenborough means 100 years spent teaching humanity that the world is not ours to own, it is something wild, delicate and extraordinary that we are lucky enough to witness.

For so many of us in wildlife rescue and conservation, your voice became the soundtrack to why we care. Why we stop for injured animals on roads. Why we stay up through the night feeding joeys. Why we fight so hard for creatures that cannot ask for help themselves.

You made people fall in love with animals they would never meet. And once people love something… they protect it.

That may be one of the greatest gifts anyone has ever given this planet.

Happy 100th Birthday to a man who didn’t just document the natural world, you changed it forever.

Today we celebrate one of the most misunderstood and most important animals in our ecosystem.

Bats are vital to a healthy environment. Our microbats can eat thousands of insects in a single night (including mozzies 🦟), while flying foxes play a critical role in pollinating native plants and spreading seeds that keep our forests growing.

Right now, we’re seeing firsthand just how tough life can be for these incredible animals with many coming into care dehydrated, injured, or orphaned due to extreme weather and habitat loss.

But here’s the thing:
🦇 Every bat matters
🦇 Every rescue counts
🦇 And every person can make a difference

Simple actions like planting native trees, turning off outdoor fans at night, and calling a licensed wildlife rescue instead of intervening yourself can help protect them.

At Woollybutt Wildlife Rescue, we’re proud to stand up for these little night flyers, not just today, but every single day.
