LAOKO NPWS Licence No. MWL000289 Our group of trained volunteer carers assist in the rescue and care of native wildlife in the local area.

Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue (LAOKO) is a 100% volunteer-run, not-for-profit wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organisation based in the Snowy Mountains region in New South Wales, Australia. Each year hundreds of native animals are injured or killed as a result of car accidents, dog attacks and human intervention in the form of unauthorised culling. Many young animals as a result are left orp

haned and our organisation assists in the raising of these orphans and rehabilitating for release back into the wild. If you find an injured animal in our area, please contact us as soon as possible on (02) 6456 1313.

We had a terrific day at our Basic Bird Care course in Berridale today! ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆœ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

Presented by our neighbouring wildlife group's bird expert, Maryanne Gates, of Wildcare Queanbeyan, attendees discovered all there is to know about basic bird rescue, care of baby birds, types of equipment and methods used to rescue and transport birds, feeding, how to house and rehabilitate a range of birds and more! ๐ŸŒŸ

We welcomed new members interested in becoming bird carers, and those members needing to refresh their training ๐Ÿ‘‹

If you would like to discover more about LAOKO, to join or become a carer/rescuer visit our website ๐Ÿ”— https://laokosmwr.org/

Thank you also to Berridale Inn for providing a fantastic training venue - you were extremely accommodating - thank you for your hospitality ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ๐ŸŽ‰

There is sometimes confusion about who to contact when an animal is injured on or beside the road, particularly when the animal is a non-native species such as a deer ๐ŸฆŒ

LAOKOโ€™s wildlife rescue and rehabilitation activities principally concern native wildlife. However, this does not mean LAOKO will leave a severely injured non-native animal to suffer.

LAOKO has appropriately licensed and trained euthanasers who may respond to both native and non-native animals where humane euthanasia is lawful and necessary. This includes deer and other introduced species. LAOKO can assess the circumstances and arrange an appropriate response or referral.

LAOKO has a network of trained wildlife rescuers and authorised euthanasers across the Snowy Mountains. Where an injured animal cannot be rescued, treated or rehabilitated, a euthanaser may be dispatched to end its suffering as quickly and humanely as possible.

โœ… specifically trained in the humane euthanasia of different species;
โœ… trained to assess the animal, traffic, terrain, surroundings and other safety risks;
โœ… experienced and competent fi***rm users;
โœ… appropriately licensed; and
โœ… equipped to select the appropriate method, fi***rm and am******on for the particular animal and circumstances.

This is specialist animal-welfare work. Police may also assist when necessary, particularly where there is an immediate danger to motorists or the public. However, police equipment and operational training are primarily intended for policing rather than animal euthanasia. Any discharge of a police fi***rm also creates significant safety, reporting and accountability requirements and may divert officers from other urgent duties.

For these reasons, where there is no immediate threat to human safety, LAOKO should generally be contacted first and the police used as a backup if LAOKO cannot be reached or cannot respond.

๐Ÿ”ธ Protect yourself first. Pull over only where it is safe and do not stand in a traffic lane.
๐Ÿ”ธ Turn on your hazard lights and warn other motorists if you can do so safely.
๐Ÿ”ธ Do not chase, approach or attempt to restrain a large or mobile animal. An injured animal can be frightened, unpredictable and dangerous.
๐Ÿ”ธ Record the precise location, direction of travel, nearby landmarks and the animalโ€™s condition.
๐Ÿ”ธ Call LAOKO on (02) 6456 1313 and remain available to provide directions or updates.
๐Ÿ”ธ If LAOKO cannot be reached, contact the police as the backup response.
๐Ÿ”ธ If the animal or incident presents an immediate danger to people or traffic, call 000.
๐Ÿ”ธ If a native animal has died and it is safe to observe it from a distance, please also tell LAOKO whether it may be female. There may be pouch young or dependent young nearby.

LAOKO is a volunteer organisation, so there may occasionally be a delay in answering the telephone or finding an available responder. Nevertheless, calling LAOKO first gives the animal the best opportunity to receive assistance from someone specifically trained, licensed and equipped for wildlife rescue or humane euthanasia.

Most importantly, please do not leave an injured animal suffering without reporting it. One telephone call can make an enormous difference.

Every body meet Lula!

Lula first came into our care 3 years ago at just 700 grams, and has made home at one of our release sites. Weโ€™ve watched her grow, play, get up to no good, learn how to behave as a wombatโ€ฆ and quite beautifully - we have now watched her become a mother! ๐ŸŒธ

This little bub is starting to peep out of her pouch to give us a wave and see the big world outside!

Letโ€™s play a game.. as bubs hasnโ€™t emerged from the pouch yet, we donโ€™t know the s*x!
However, we think every being deserves their own name. ๐Ÿค

Drop a unis*x name in the comments, which ever name receives the most likes, wins privilege of giving that name to our new orphan Joey! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

To follow along Lula and her joeys journey, follow and share our page so more people can see the amazing time of these two going through life together!

Bec is one of our many, many winter Eastern Grey Kangaroo joey rescues - she is in the safe and loving care of one of LAOKO's experienced joey carers ๐Ÿฆ˜

Weighing in at 777grams, she is a lively and inquisitive little joey, and is always on the look out for her next bottle feed ๐Ÿผ

We look forward to sharing Bec's progress with you โค

Two cases of the deadly H5 bird flu have been detected in Merimbula on the state's far south coast.

In a statement Bega Valley Shire council said that two crested terns found at Spencers Park and Mitchies Jetty tested positive over the weekend.

It takes the total detections of bird flu in New South Wales to seven, with previous cases found at Narooma and Eden on the south coast, Wentworth in the state's west and Hawks Nest on the mid north coast.
