Yes we are cute, yes we are vulnerable and yes we miss our mother’s love.
You may think all we need is cuddles and care.
But please ❌DO NOT❌ keep me. I am a wild animal and for the best interest of my own survival - I need to be treated like one in the hands of a certified carer.

We are protected in NSW under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 which means I am illegal to keep unless you have training, certification and hold a biosecurity license. 🦇

LAOKO has many carers who can provide adequate care and rehabilitation. If you come across an injured animal or an orphan joey please call us immediately for advice and next steps on 02 6456 1313. 🦜

Can you help fatten up a few baby possums? Monaro Veterinary Clinic at 3 Massie St Cooma, working with LAOKO, currently have a few orphaned baby possums in care for the next few months. Some of the things they love to eat are banksia and bottle brush flowers. The pair below (a male and a female) are eagerly eyeing their evening meal. There are a few bottle brush bushes in autumn flower at the moment in Cooma gardens…and if you can spare any flowers, please drop them in to Monaro Veterinary Clinic (Monday to Friday). Pruning your flowers is actually very good for next season’s growth!

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 '𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝘆' 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆! 😍

“Scotty”, a lucky little pinky male Bare-nosed Wombat, came into LAOKO's care in April after a member of the public discovered him during a pouch check.

Sadly, "Scotty's mum had died in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) near Berridale and he would have succumbed to the cold if he'd not been found.

Weighing in at 395 grams, and very cold, it took 3 hours to slowly and safely warm him up.

Scotty is currently receiving expert care which includes feeding five times a day - he now weighs a healthy 583 grams and can self-regulate his body temperature as his fur grows.

It's always worth stopping to check on dead wildlife you spot roadside. Even though mum has died, joeys can survive in the pouch for a number of days, particularly if well furred.

It’s always lovely to hear feedback about our Introduction to Macropod Joey Care course! 🦘🦘🦘

After 2 training sessions, some of our regular joey carers refreshed their training and we welcomed new members to LAOKO and those from our neighbouring wildlife groups. 👋

Not everyone has the capacity to be a joey carer (it’s an extremely large commitment) but our course is a great introduction for anyone wishing to discover more about macropods, joey care and rescue. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓

Many thanks to Michael Milne - LAOKO's past Secretary and long time joey carer (30+ years experience!) and to Lisa Petroff for delivering a brief wildlife rescue course. ❤️

Now, LAOKO volunteers are getting ready for our peak rescue time, the advent of Australia’s snow season - only 4 weeks away! ❄️❄️❄️

You can help our native wildlife stay cool, calm and hydrated - too easy! 🦎🐍🦘🦜🦔🦉🐨

💦 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 in various locations in your yard/property, preferably placed in the shade 🌳
💦 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀/𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 for lizards, snakes, echidnas, wombats, kangaroos/wallabies or high off the ground for birds and possums.
💦 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 to provide stability and add sticks to ensure creatures can easily climb out.

If you find a native animal that appears to be heat-stressed, for example nocturnal animals out in the daytime, tree-dwelling creatures on the ground or birds and other wildlife displaying any loss of balance, collapse, confusion or panting, please call Snowy Mountains Wildlife Rescue (LAOKO) on 6456 1313 for further advice. ☎️
