Every year on May 21, the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates the Feast Day of Agios Konstantinos ( Saint Constantine the Great) and Agia Eleni (Saint Helena). for their major contributions to Christianity

Saint Constantine was the Roman Emperor who ended the persecution of Christians with the Edict of Milan (Edict of Toleration) in 313 AD and helped establish freedom of worship and enabling Christianity to spread. This day is significant as is honours Saint Constantine as the founder of Constantinople and who convened the First Council of Nicaea in 325.

Saint Helena, his devout mother, journeyed to the Holy Lands in Jerusalem and miraculously discovered the True Cross of Christ and the aromatic herb, basil, growing in the shape of a cross. Each year on September 14th, Orthodox Christians remember the cross on September 14th on the Feast Day of the Elevation of the Cross by taking home some fresh basil.

Saint Helena, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where Christ was born, and yet another on the Mount of Olives. She also established many other churches throughout the Holy Land and Cyprus amongst other places.

Wishing a very happy and blessed Name Day to everyone celebrating today! 🌿☦️

Konstantinos, Con, Kosta, Konstantina, Eleni, Helen, Helena Xronia Polla!

23 April – St George Name Day - Αγίου Γεωργίου

Today in the Greek Orthodox Church (23 April) is the Feast Day of Saint George (Agios Georgios) — one of the most beloved and widely celebrated saints.

Who is Saint George?

Saint George was a Roman soldier and Christian martyr from the 3rd century. He is known for his courage, strong faith, and refusal to renounce Christianity during persecution under Emperor Diocletian. He was martyred around 303 AD.

The St George icon depicts:
• Saint George on a white horse
• Spearing a dragon, symbolising the triumph of good over evil, faith over fear
• Often includes a princess and city in the background, representing those saved by his faith and bravery
• The gold background reflects divine glory and holiness

Meaning of the Dragon Story

In Orthodox tradition, the dragon is symbolic, not just literal:
• Represents evil, sin, and chaos
• Saint George’s victory represents Christ’s victory through faith

NB: If Pascha (Easter) falls after April 23, the feast of Saint George is moved to Easter Monday — because major saints are not celebrated during Holy Week.

St Thomas Sunday - 19th April 2026

Antipascha: Saint Thomas Sunday is observed on April 19, 2026. It is a special "floating" name day in the Greek Orthodox tradition because its date is tied directly to the date of Pascha (Easter).

On this Sunday we celebrate the appearance of our Risen Lord to the Apostle Thomas. This day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is observed by the Greek Orthodox Church. It is a significant event where the eleven disciples go to Galilee to find Jesus, and he reassures them of his resurrection.

While the Apostle Thomas is also commemorated on a fixed date (October 6th), most people named Thomas (Thomas, Tom, Thomai) celebrate their name day on this specific Sunday, exactly one week after Easter.

This day is also known as Antipascha (meaning "in the stead of Pascha"). It marks the first time the Church "renews" the celebration of the Resurrection, establishing a pattern where every Sunday of the year becomes a commemoration of that event.

The Significance of the Day
The day commemorates the biblical events recorded in the Gospel of John (20:19-31). It focuses on two appearances of Christ to His disciples:
• The First Appearance: On the evening of the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples, but Thomas was not there. When they told him, he famously doubted, saying he would not believe unless he could touch the wounds in Jesus' hands and side.
• The Second Appearance: Eight days later (which is why we celebrate it one week later), Jesus appeared again while Thomas was present. He invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Thomas then uttered the profound confession of faith: "My Lord and my God!"
