Last week we had another fantastic guest speaker to our Kiwanis Club dinner. Bill Read and Kerrie Brindell from the friends of Alma Doepel : https://www.facebook.com/groups/5415314033/ spoke to us about the history of the amazing tall ship, developing youth, creating opportunities for young people to grow and learn about themselves, and the current head winds challenging the boat to find a new home.

We are incredibly grateful to our sponsor Bendigo Bank for their generous support of the Kiwanis Club of Brighton Bayside initiative to provide Hygiene Packs for distribution throughout the City of Port Phillip.

Thanks to their grant, we could source supplies, assemble the packs, and deliver them to local centres assisting those doing it tough. It’s partnerships like these that ensure community needs are met with dignity and care. 👏

June was also a super busy month at Kiwanis Club of Bayside Brighton.
At out June meeting we heard from Miranda Campbell who is the CEO of For Change Co. For Change Co. is a group of hospitality social enterprises that exist with the mission of eliminating youth homelessness in Melbourne. Our enterprises include Crêpes for Change, For Change Cafes in Middle Park, Bellfield, Brunswick, Melbourne Uni and The Coffee Cart at RMIT. 100% of profits from each enterprise are invested into our impact programs including our own Hospitality Training Program that supports young people who have experienced or are at-risk of homelessness to gain valuable employability skills and pave their own pathway out of the homelessness cycle.

It has been a busy couple of months at Kiwanis Club of Brighton Bayside.
In our April meeting we learnt about the fabulous work that is done by the charity Story Dogs. Maureen Boaler spoke to us of their purpose is to help primary school children (aged 7 10) learn to read. Formed in 2009 in northern NSW, Story Dogs has expanded to now be operating in six Australian states, partnering with 224 schools, with 374 volunteer Dog Teams helping over 1880 children every week.
Don't know if they would want my cheeky puppy, but she would love to help.

Some of us Kiwanis spent Sunday of the long weekend busy packing Hygiene Kits for Port Phillip Community Hub project: St Kilda Shower Bus. A big shout out to Bendigo Bank as the major sponsor and Loopy Towels (https://loopystowels.com.au/), these kits provide necessary hygiene products to people and children in need.

Celebrating a Year of Impact – Kiwanis Club 2024 Highlights! 🎉

As we wrap up 2024, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the incredible efforts of our Kiwanis Club members and supporters who have made a real difference in our community. 💙

✅ Spreading Joy – We celebrated a heartwarming Christmas Dinner at the Whistling Kettle, sharing great food and even greater company.
✅ Giving Back – Thanks to the generosity of our members, we donated essential hygiene kits to the Port Phillip Community Group, helping those in need.
✅ Empowering Young Minds – Through the Terrific Kids & BUGS Awards, we supported students across multiple schools, fostering confidence and achievement.
✅ Promoting Literacy – The 123 Read to Me initiative saw hundreds of books donated to schools, kindergartens, and refugee centres, ensuring every child has access to the joy of reading.
✅ Fundraising & Social Impact – Whether it was Film Nights, Theatre Nights, or collecting milk bottle tops and recyclables, every little effort added up to make a big difference.
🎉 BIG NEWS! – We’re thrilled to announce that Bendigo Bank has granted us $10,000 to continue our work with PPCG hygiene kits, allowing us to extend our reach and help even more people in need.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all our members, volunteers, and supporters. Your dedication is what makes our community stronger. Here’s to an even bigger 2025! 🌟

PPCG offers comprehensive services to individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, often dealing with complex challenges such as mental and physical health issues, housing insecurity, family violence, low income, substance dependency, and unemployment. Their service model is client-centred and open, focusing on collaboration and community partnerships informed by stakeholder feedback.
Our club assist PPCG by providing sanitation packs for people in need, the costs of contents are generously donated by Bendigo Bank.
