Happy World Bicycle Day everyone!

And importantly Happy World Bicycle Day to your bikes too - whatever type, colour, age, style they may be. May your tyres be inflated, your brakes brilliant, your bell dinging joyfully and your gears changing smoothly.

Oh what adventures you have taken your owners on, the fuel and money you have saved them, the exercise you have assisted them with and the joy and happiness you have brought them.

Here's to another year of riding - any trips you can ride and replace a car journey are great trips. :-)

With fuel prices not dropping anytime soon, we need real transport options.
Otherwise we’re locked into paying $$$ each week - often for a bunch of short trips.
If alternatives to driving were more viable, people would have the to choose the 'Best Tool for the Job' instead of being stuck with the worst.

No ridiculous car trips.

We could all get some tips and pointers from this video from Malmo Municipality in Sweden.

What is your ridiculous car trip that you could turn into a walk, ride, scoot or catch public transport?

No ridiculous car trips is an informational film about a campaign with the same name. Trying to get more people too choose riding their bike over their car in Malmo City. This was a commissioned work from Malmö Municipality. Part of the Malmö pavillion EXPO Shanghai 2010 See the new: Bicycle Malm....

The first ramp opens on what is a fantastic and game changing project for Bendigo. The rest of the initial stages (north and south) of the project will open by the end of this year.

We need many more such projects to build a safe and comfortable bike riding network separated and protected from motor vehicle traffic.

Please show your support and keep up the calls to Council, State and Federal Governments to fund much more infrastructure like this for Bendigo.

The first ramp of the Low Line project is open 🎉

The ramp at the intersection of Back Creek and Bendigo Creek (at the rear of Bendigo Tennis Centre) has been completed and is ready to be used by the community!

This means you can get onto the Low Line at this ramp and walk, ride or scoot off-road along the Low Line to Weeroona Avenue and then continue out along the Bendigo Creek Trail to Epsom.

As the price of fuel is high, why not choose active transport for a healthier and more cost-effective way to travel around our beautiful city.

The Bendigo Low Line project is an investment by the Victorian Government’s Council Support Package and the City of Greater Bendigo in infrastructure for safe, active and sustainable travel in Greater Bendigo.

More ramps will open as they are completed on the project.

A fantastic article from the ABC that we would strongly recommend all read.

The evidence of the benefits of creating safe and comfortable lanes for people to ride their bikes separated from travel for everyday transportation is clear.

"But at the rate Australian cities are building cycling networks, a cohesive system is probably another 50 years away, experts speaking to The Fifth Estate warned. Progress is slow. (One bike bridge was recently installed in Melbourne after 37 years of lobbying and discussion.)"

Progress is still much too slow ..... but here in Bendigo, Bike Bendigo is not giving up ......

Climate change, the cost-of-living crisis and healthy lifestyle goals should make active transport like cycling a no-brainer. So why does Australia struggle to build a bike culture?

The Netherlands stands out as the undisputed world leader in everyday commuter cycling. The entire country is built around bikes, with dedicated infrastructure, right-of-way laws favouring cyclists, and a cultural norm where cycling is simply how you get around. Cities large and small all benefit. But China is catching up fast! Where can City of Greater Bendigo get to? We have made a bit of a start - but we have a huge way yet to go!

Top Countries
Netherlands — The gold standard. Separated cycle paths everywhere, excellent bike parking, and cycling accounts for ~27% of all trips nationally.
Denmark — Closely rivals the Netherlands, with a particularly strong cycling culture in its cities.
Germany — Extensive national cycling network, strong investment in urban infrastructure, and a deeply embedded cycling habit.
Finland & Sweden — Impressive year-round cycling culture even in cold climates, with well-maintained winter paths.
Japan — Incredibly high cycling participation, though infrastructure style is different (bikes often share footpaths).
Belgium — Particularly strong in Flanders, with well-connected intercity cycling routes.

Now this is school transport on the style of dedicated cycleway that we need throughout Bendigo.

Note the separate footpath next to the cycleway - NOT a shared path.
