The Ironbark Gully Friends

The Ironbark Gully Friends We are children, women, men; family, neighbours, friends. We are Growing Together a healthy community where everyone is welcome and each of us can contribute.

A place to meet each other, to belong. We are Growing a Community and renewing the Habitat Since June 2013, a very diverse and passionate group of volunteers has been meeting to develop land which is a remnant of mining along Ironbark Gully, into a Public Open Space. The land concerned is currently under management of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the City of

Greater Bendigo. In November 2013, our group became an Action Group of the Bendigo Sustainability Group and in late 2020 became incorporated under the Landcare umbrella. Our mission is to encourage locals to adopt a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Our activities cover creating and building community connections, re-vegetating parts of the public land along the gully and supporting the creation of a shared path from Nolan Street to Eaglehawk Road along the gully. The shared path will run all along the gully linking existing paths and will promote a healthier lifestyle by providing local residents and visitors with a convenient and safe route for walking, running, cycling, skating and using wheel chairs, pushers and prams. As a consequence, the gully will develop into an attractive community space where locals and visitors can see and practice new ideas in a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive environment. This project is open to all to participate at the level that best meets their lifestyle, commitments and needs. By being a welcoming and inclusive group, the Ironbark Gully Friends aspire to have a diverse range of community groups contributing to the Public Open Space. The philosophy of the Ironbark Gully Friends is that through small individual efforts, global changes can be made. As the Ironbark Gully Friends community group has developed and while waiting for the Public Open Space to become established, the friends group has hosted community shindigs. In the future they hope to have festivals, markets and fairs with a particular emphasis on householders growing their own food. Community groups will be able to run training programs in being sustainable such as bicycle repair workshops. Also sustainability focused initiatives such workshops on aspects of the local environment will be possible when a community venue is available. The vision of Ironbark Gully Friends is that of a healthy community in a healthy place. We hope an upsurge of enthusiasm will come from becoming part of a sharing connected community of like-minded groups and organizations. Our goals are similar to the Greater Bendigo +25 Community Plan: Greater Bendigo 2036 supported by City of Greater Bendigo Council members and include:

Liveability: quality of life, health, sense of safety, access to services, cost of living, comfortable living standards, mobility and transport, air quality and social participation. Productivity: innovation in education and opportunity in employment

Sustainability: reducing the consumption of resources, specially carbon fuels, reducing waste and generating and celebrating new industries which create positive outcomes from climate change conditions.

The amazing dedication of our treasurer Ken Beasley has been acknowledged by Planet Ark. Stay posted for details of thos year's National Tree Day at Prouses Rd Recreation Reserve on Sunday July 26th.

National Tree Day is made possible by the thousands of individuals who volunteer their time each year to take positive action for the environment and their community. They are council staff, teachers, Landcare members, faith groups, community organisations and everyday people who want to connect wit...

A happy group of IGF members went out to start planting trees at Prouses Road reserve this morning. Planted, watered, mulched and made and installed plant guards, then we had a well-deserved morning tea.
We'll get a larger group of volunteers to continue the work on National Tree Day, so keep your eyes open for date and time and join in!

Get along for this terrific event. Win for Mums! Win for the Environment!

Get along for this terrific event. Win for Mums! Win for the Environment!

Mother’s Day means different things to different people.
For some it’s a celebration, for others it’s a time of reflection.

Whatever it means to you, we sincerely hope our Mother’s Day event might be just what you need.

Plant with Mum, for a Mum or in honour of a Mum or child you’ve lost.

It’s a day for family. It’s a day for letting nature be just what you need 💚

This could be very interesting for regenerating the creeks around Bendigo.

This could be very interesting for regenerating the creeks around Bendigo.

You might call them reeds, but they’re actually called phragmites, and they are a staple of a lot of creeks and rivers across our catchment.

Understanding them and how to manage them is the focus of a Forest Creek Revitalisation Project workshop on 21 May.

The Arthur Rylah Institute’s Fiona Sutton will lead the workshop, which is a great chance for natural resource management and Landcare professionals and volunteers to skill up.

Today was a follow-up with this amazing little machine digging the rock-hard soil, clay and rocks in no time at all for the 25 trees going in soon. Rob finished it off with a high-pressure water do-dad which will create a reserve of water around each of the holes.

On Sunday after the rain stopped Rob, Diane and Philippe marked out the spots for our first trees at the edge of Djandak's zone at Prouses Rd Recreation Reserve. So good for sods to be turned after an 8 year wait.

A great opportunity to find out the latest. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ECR7UU253/

A great team demolished seven bags of gazanias at the Victoria Street planting this morning. And there are more near the walking path for the next time .... soon .... before they flower. We discovered bridal veil in a few spots. Lots of old protectors were removed and slow starting plants protected from people and bikes taking shortcuts.
Thanks Anni, Diane, JD, Bill, Liam, Marg, Charles, Anne, Philippe and Marie for your efforts and Diane for the yummy scones and jam.

The colourful flowers of gazanias might attract you to buy them at a nursery but it is worth considering whether you are getting an invasive w**d causing havoc to our landscapes.

Our trail is still on the list. It will be May 2026 next week. We'd love to see some concrete signs.

Today a regular friend of Ironbark Gully sent this photo and message - Just near the new house that has been built next to the park. Then it flew over to a tree near the creek/gully when Max and I walked in for closer view. Really healthy bird. Watched it for around 15 min. It was near dusk. The Butcher birds were dive bombing..... Isn't our gully a marvellous place! Video on the first comment.
