Celebrating International Day of the Girl 2026

What an inspiring morning! 💛

Zonta Club of Bendigo was delighted to bring our community together to celebrate International Day of the Girl and explore the many possibilities that lie ahead for girls and young women - especially in the sciences.

A huge thank you to our wonderful speakers, Dr Bree Wright and Amelia Campagnaro, who shared their journeys with such honesty, warmth and inspiration. From international sporting achievements to a career in healthcare, their stories reminded us that there is no single path to success. Life is full of opportunities, unexpected turns and challenges, and sometimes the most important step is simply having the courage to say yes to apply for and embrace an opportunity.

Their conversation encouraged us all to dream big, embrace new experiences and believe in what is possible. Most importantly, it showed our young people that where you begin does not determine where you can go. ✨

👏 Thank you to Ember and Zonta Bendigo’s Service and Advocacy Committee for organising this wonderful event and creating an opportunity for girls, women, families and friends to come together, listen, learn and be inspired.

🙏 Our sincere thanks also to Andrew from Golden City Support Services for providing such a fabulous venue and helping make the morning so special.

And thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, shared in the conversation and helped make this such a positive celebration.

Are you a female future business leader?

Check out this award opportunity.

The Zonta Bendigo Future Business Leaders Award is a new award offered by Zonta Bendigo. It has been established to support women studying business, including business law, and to encourage the development of future female leaders in the business community.

The $1,500 award is open to women who have completed their first year, or transitioning into second year from TAFE, and will be enrolling, in the second, third or honours year of an undergraduate Business-related degree for 2027. Eligible fields include Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Management, Marketing, Law, Operations Management, Human Resources Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship.

We are particularly interested in encouraging applications from students who demonstrate:

academic excellence and potential in their chosen field;
leadership promise;
a commitment to volunteering and community involvement; and
an interest in creating a more equal world for women through advocacy and action.

Applications open in October 2026 and close on 30 November 2026.

The award is selected at Club level following an application and interview process. The successful recipient will receive $1,500 towards educational expenses and will be presented with a certificate at our annual International Women’s Day Dinner in March 2027.

💛 2,000 BIRTHING KITS PACKED – WHAT AN AMAZING COMMUNITY EFFORT! 🌍
Today was a very special day for Zonta Bendigo, as our members, family members and wonderful community volunteers came together to pack 2,000 birthing kits that will be distributed to women in countries where a clean and hygienic environment for giving birth may not otherwise be available.
A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.
Special thanks to Robyne Livingstone and Ann Horrocks, our Birthing Kit Coordinators, for the enormous amount of work they put into organising today’s assembly. Thank you also to Shirley and all our Zonta members who helped prepare, organise and keep everything moving so smoothly on the day.
And a very special thank you to the students from Bendigo CMC and East Loddon P-12 College, who generously spent time pre-folding 1,400 plastic sheets in preparation for today. Your contribution was an important part of getting us ready for the big day. 💛
We are also incredibly grateful to the community members, family members and volunteers who gave up part of their Saturday to come along. Whether you stayed for an hour or worked throughout the day, every contribution mattered.
It is estimated that for every 11 birthing kits distributed, a mother or baby’s life is saved. Our 2,000 kits could potentially help save around 180 lives, while providing a more hygienic birthing environment for many others.
What an incredible reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose.

This weekend, volunteers will come together at Spring Gully Hall to turn all that preparation into 2,000 completed Birthing Kits.

Violence against women is deeply connected to patriarchy, gender socialisation, unequal power and intersecting forms of discrimination. Sociology helps us look beyond individual acts to the social structures that enable and normalise violence—and the changes needed to build safer, more equal communities.
