GAP NSW

GAP NSW The Greyhound Adoption Program (NSW), Inc. is a non-profit organisation which is dedicated to the welfare of Greyhounds. And they don't need a big back yard.

Our primary purpose is to find permanent loving homes for these beautiful hounds. The Greyhound Adoption Program of NSW Inc (GAP NSW) is a volunteer-run charity that has been in existence since 1998, working to educate the public on the benefits and care of Greyhounds, and their suitability as companions. We finance our activities from donations and membership, and are not connected to or receive

any money from racing bodies. Greyhounds are delightful dogs - they are clean, quiet, don't shed a lot, don't require a lot of exercise, and tend to sleep unless something exciting is happening. They are usually good with children, being very calm and tolerant (although children should not be left unsupervised with any dog). They are usually extremely healthy, having few inherited diseases compared to other breeds. Greyhounds coming into GAP NSW are tested for their suitability to live as a pet. Successful Greyhounds are then desexed, and spend time in a foster home learning all about strange things like stairs, vacuum cleaners, sliding glass doors, smooth floors and other normal domestic situations that are initially quite strange to them. Greyhounds are suited to a range of family situations. From young singles, young couples, families with children and retirees. Some of our Greys live in flats/units. Greyhounds are connoisseurs of comfort. They like nothing more than finding the comfiest spot in the house and curling up for a snooze. They are lounge lizards in a racing costume! (Mind you GAP does not condone Greyhounds using human furniture.) Like to know more? Perhaps you would like to become a foster carer? Or get up close and personal with a Greyhound? Greetings from the lovely Ruby, who moved to the US with owners Eleanor & Chris several years ago. Ruby is now 11yo & has had a few health issues of late, but is still ruling the roost. This is her "butter wouldn't melt in her mouth" look. Living her best life for sure! 🥰

Well Lucy tried her hand (paw?) at a new dog sport today at the Northern Suburbs Dog Training Club's double Tricks Trial at St Ives. Despite threatening rain, the weather remained fine & cool. At Starters level, the dog has to perform 6 tricks from a set list. Lucy qualified in the morning trial with a score of 53/60 (coming 6th in the ring) but didn't successfully complete one of the 6 tricks in the afternoon. Very proud of this clever & versatile little Miss who also has her Rally Novice title as well as several Scent Work titles.

For the Saturday afternoon St Ives walkers, please note that the council, in their great wisdom, has erected locked gates at either end of the roadway leading to our regular parking area. You will need to park on the bitumen carpark or other areas of the grounds. We will still meet up in the same location. Note also that tomorrow (Sat 1st Aug) there is an Agility trial on the main oval, so could be additional cars present, although by our meet time of 3.45pm, this is likely to be wrapped up.

It's been two months since Lucy last competed in a Scent Work trial but this weekend she had two trials in two days. On Friday night she competed in the Dobermann Club trial Ultimate search at Orchard Hills - but there were no qualifiers from the 19 dogs who took part. On Saturday she took part in the Western Sydney Scent Work Club trial at Richmond Race Club, Londonderry. We won't talk about her Ultimate search there - let's just say she forgot she was there to sniff! Fortunately later in the afternoon she got her mojo back & gained a qualification in Masters Interiors. Good girl Lucy!

Panda made a return to the racetrack yesterday at age 10.5 years & almost 5 years to the day since he retired. In his 100 start career he raced at Richmond Race Club 10 times. However yesterday he was there acting as cheer squad for his little sister Lucy who was competing in a Scent Work competition.

Miss Lucy has had fun recently travelling around Sydney and attempting a few more Ultimate scent work searches. No more qualifications but gaining experience, confidence and stamina with each one. Last Saturday at the Hills Dog Club trial she qualified in a Masters Exteriors search. In the Ultimate level search she found all the hides in the search area (there were 6) & then found an "extra" one for good measure. ☺️
