No consultation has taken place with Gumbaynggirr regarding the logging of Tuckers Nob. A stop work order has been requested by Aunty Alison Buchanan and supported by the community.

COMMUNITY PREPARING TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION

People are gathering every day blocking the entrance to Tuckers K**b State forest to Defend Country at all costs. Logging machinery is on the way trying to come in this week!

Senior lore woman Aunty Alison Buchanan has put in a stop work order as well as an emergency protection application stating there is No consent from Gumbaynggirr Elders and that Forestry cannot continue any operations without consulting Elders and community.

The Great Koala National Park has been announced. However, this Park is not as it was envisioned by the “Father of the GKNP” Ashley Love. The highest quality koala habitat through Pine Creek, Orara East and Tuckers Nob State Forests have been excluded, denying koalas critical corridors to access other protected areas and reducing their range to small and potentially unviable pockets. On top of this, these state forests are labelled “plantation” and this will allow the ongoing clear-fell logging of these forest ecosystems.

Other sections have been reduced to Regional Park, allowing for further damage in the form recreational activities which could further endanger koalas.

The Great Koala National Park was envisioned to protect one of Australia’s most important natural and cultural heritage sites. But in the final proposal, the heart of the park has been ripped out. This petition seeks to restore the original vision for the Park.

We call on the NSW government to declare the park that the Gumbaynggirr, koalas and people of NSW want and deserve.

John Pile, environmental campaigner and koala expert, outlines the importance of protecting the so-called plantation areas which make up the Forest Bridge, ensuring connectivity from the Dorrigo plateau through to the coast for the largest coastal koala population in NSW.

The forests of Tuckers Nob and Pine Creek are potentially the richest and most important koala
habitat remaining in Australia. But those forests have been redefined as plantation and removed from the proposed Park. They will be retained for permanent clearfell logging.

These two forests are the meeting point for the paths that koalas must take in moving between the many populations that live within the GKNP. Many other areas of plantation that are high in natural and cultural value and essential to the long-term recovery of koala populations have been excluded.
